A lot of their loyal fan base have been with them since they first hit the charts, and so it follows that many of them share the same fate, ie: either aging or passed on. Oh sure, there are a certain amount of younger people who listen for one reason or another. But not enough to ever bring that format into CHR numbers. And without CHR numbers, you're not gonna get CHR spot dollars.
Radio is a business, and an expensive business at that. It's hard to criticise owners (particularly individual owners, as opposed to corporate overlords) who tweak formats in an attempt to realize fiscal gain. Even if it means dumping programming that is dear to a select few.
Are you in the radio business by any chance? (Copy writer, maybe?)
