WVNY-Channel 22 to move to Colchester

(From the "Rutland Herald")

SOUTH BURLINGTON — The two partner companies that bought WVNY-Channel 22 in May are looking at moving the station to Colchester, an official with one of the companies says.

That possible move to the offices of WFFF-Channel 44 could make for greater efficiency, since the Colchester-based Fox affiliate is owned by a corporate sibling of one of the companies that bought WVNY.

I was just going to post that too!!! Anyway, I hope the new company brings the news back. I was a weather intern there in the summer of 2002. I learned a LOT from everyone there! All of the staff were super nice and talented at what they did. It was a shame the all got screwed out of their jobs because of the higher up political stuff.

Certainly, under the same ownership as WFFF-44, WVNY-22 could amortize the costs of running a local news operation better, since the "evening" team (anchors, reports, studio techs, news editors, videographers, etc.) could also produce a half-hour or hour-long 10 P.M. newscast on WFFF in addition to a half-hour of news at 11 P.M. and at least a half-hour of news at 6 P.M. (if not an hour at 5:30 or 90 minutes at 5) on WVNY.

The additional expenses of a local 10 P.M. newscast on the Fox station would be minimal, but WVNY/WFFF might be able to gain more revenue, revenue that could be the difference between profit or loss for a local news operation.

The negative of WFFF having a 10PM newscast, though, is a later start-time for their "WB Time" block. And this is where the risk-taking goes into play -- will viewers tune in anyway for the news at ten, then stay for WB Time; or will it encourage some to tune in elsewhere at 10, with the risk of not returning for WB Time after the news?

Doesn't the Burlington/Plattsburgh market still have channel 27 available? I think they used to be a UPN affiliate. (Actually, isn't that station technically a low-power station?)

WWBI-LP is still on channel 27, operating as an "i" affiliate but not owned by Paxson. According to TV Hat (www.geocities.com/tvhatton/), that channel was originally supposed to be a Fox affiliate, but ended up with UPN in 1995 and later with Pax when UPN moved to WBVT-LP, which was the local WB outlet before WB moved onto WFFF. Somebody associated with the TV Hat website told me that the WB network does not want to be on an LP station there. Personally I think that market is small enough that WB can air on cable only, or on a DT subchannel of WFFF.

Unfortunately, that can be difficult -- Burlington is too high (I think) to be part of the WB's 100+ service.

As for digital TV -- the Burlington-based stations (whose trannies are on Mt. Mansfield) won't begin digital service until 2006, due to various problems.

The Burlington-Plattsburgh cable systems do get full-time WB -- from WPIX.

That's correct, the market is too big for WB100+ systems.
