WVOC complaint

Visiting the Columbia area again this week and this morning I listened to WVOC's morning news and wow did it sound bad. Not only was it terribly slow paced but the anchors sounded extremely disinterested and bored. Might as well have slept in til 9. I haven't listened to WISW's morning news program yet I'm skeptical if its any better.

I can assure you the WVOC morning show is better than WISW. I'm sure they are nice guys but it is not the same without Gene McKay. Maybe you just caught them on a bad morning.

If you were bored with WVOC then don't bother listening to WISW, non stop talking and I agree, not the same since McKay is no longer with us.

Listened again this morning and they sounded much, much more energized today. Perhaps they didn't have their coffee the other morning? In any case, the anchors being awake made it better to listen to the news.

Never listened to WISW yet their signal seems messy in the mornings.

I'm dating myself (In my 40's), and I go back as far as the 70's during grade school in Irmo. I remember my parents listening to the former WIS 56 with Gene McKay Mornings and Bill Benton's "Time to Talk" program.
Their personalities seemed to blend well together with the station and were always on top of things, especially during a snow event like Columbia experienced last week.

Ahhh... the glory days of McCay & Benton. Wasn't Mike Collins also there before he went to Charlotte? Wow, back when WVOC (then WIS radio) was really full service. No offesnse to Barboza (love him) but 560 has gone to Hell. And would somebody please grab the ClearChannel janitor and let him replace Kevin Cohen?! Good God, talk about Nightmares In Broadcasting!!!

Keven Cohen and a great guy, personally and a phenomenal sports anchor. To me, it just sounds like a general (as opposed to sports) talk hosting is a little out of his strengths. It always seemed to me when I've caught his show that a consultant told him to repeat whatever the conservative position is on any subject, stick to the talking points, and pander to that audience. I don't seem to have caught any insight or analysis from Keven at all. Let him gab about any or all sports, and he's on the money.

I remember when Kevin was the sports show on 1400 in the afternoons, what a great show and it was quite difficult to get in. He is a great guy and quite knowledgeable about many topics and I am sure that the suits at WVOC keep him constrained and try to make him a Rush want a be. I remember the glory days of 560 in the 60's-early 80's. Mike Collins did use to work there as well as Bill Drake and quite a few others that I am sure that we could name.

Kevin may be a nice guy (some would argue that point) but his show is horrible!!! He spends the first ten minutes of the show telling you what he is going to talk about...but he tells you five different ways...talk about redundancy!!! Kevin needs to take a lesson from radio 101 "Never let someone better than you, fill in for you!" McDougal is better by far! And btw...Don't we get enough national talk with Beck and Rush? Kev can't hold a candle to either of these guys, and he comes off sounding like an amateur.

Dave McDougall is a pro. He's been doing local/general talk at least since the mid-1980's. He filled in for John Wrisley in the late 1980's to Mid 1990's on AM56. Smooth, knowledgeable, and an incredibly nice guy, as well.

I agree McDougall does a good job. Here's what is amazing about Kevin's situation. He has continued to do this show for years now completely unchallenged. So with no alternatives available, he gets all these heavy hitter politicians on his show.

I will say that Kevin does a very good job with endorsements. I heard one for the Melting Pot that made me want to take my wife there. That kind of client relationship has probably helped him keep his gig.

I remember when Dave McDoogle did the news for WCOS-AM in the 1970's and early 1980's and he was great then and does seem like a great guy who really knows his stuff, and would have to agree that Kevin Cohen does an awesome job for his sponsors and the way that he does them amkes one want to visit them.

I guess I'm getting somewhat off topic, but I remember Dave back then too..I was working at WCOS-AM at the time(80-81...when Jake Bogan was the GM). There was a girl from Sumter working in news then, too, named Cindy Taylor. Very cool chick and, along with Dave, had WCOS news covered. As luck would have it, I think she ultimately became a woman of the cloth..entering(I'm not on firm ground title or terminology-wise...I'm a dormant Episcopalian) the Episcopal priesthood.

I had forgotten about her because she did the news in the morning on WCOS FM as well, as I remember she was pretty talented and often wondered happened to her. Those were the good old days with WCOS AM and FM.

It is Clear Channel. Their stations are all about how many spots they can air and sell. End and done.

hopefully they sell them before they air them. is there something i am missing about commercial radio?
