WVON - Sharon McGhee

Tuesday, August 22, 2006

Sharon McGhee
News Director & Host of her morning radio show "Firstlight" Monday through Friday, from 5am - 6am on WVON 1450 AM

Lately I have been monitoring WVON 1450 AM because they are going to be moving their station and call letters from 1450KHz to 1690KHz in which they are replacing my favorite radio station WRLL AM-1690 Real Oldies Station as of September 18 2006.

This morning she was talking about President Bush for this morning’s topic as she had quoted by saying that George Bush and his ancestors throughout many generations, it all of his ancestors as she referred as to be called: natural born killers! Callers were calling into the station and by making revolting remarks about President Bush stating that he should be assassinated or thrown out of the Whitehouse because of the war in Iraq that President Bush had had started ever since 9/11.

Sharon McGhee was praising her callers by cheering them on as callers were calling into the radio station, by making revolting statements by using foul language on the subject of President Bush.

Sharon McGhee would often used these phrases of words on her morning radio program on WVON 1450 AM, which Are:
>God Damn, or God Damn It
>**** Sucker
>Jack Shit
>Bastard

This morning Sharon McGhee said in a phrase ”Now we all know that President Bush is a no good Bastard and he loves to kill innocent people and besides that, he doesn’t do Jack Shit for us black people! That’s why Colin Powell had left the Whitehouse, because the way Colin Powell have been treated, President Bush is just like Jack Benny, the way Jack Benny treats Rochester on his program!"

In which these words are may be against the FCC Rules & Regulations, but again I could be wrong about it, because my understanding from other people had told me that the FCC are more lax and the FCC doesn’t care what people can say or the choice of words they can use on AM radio; apposed to what they CANNOT say on the FM band frequencies. From what I heard that AM radio are much liberal than the FM band.

I don’t even know how true this is, because I was brought from the old school of where with my CB ham radio days from the 1970s. And if you were caught using those words over the airwaves buddy, you be cruisin’ for a bruisin’ sonny buck!” in other words your butt would be sitting in behind bars along with a fine up to thousands of dollars.

WVON is not like the way they used to be back in the early days, when they played lot of great music like they used to way back when. It was clean and it was fun to listen to. Back then during the 1960 & 1970s WVON was referred as a colored radio station for the black community throughout the Chicagoland area.

As of today WVON is now more of a prejudice talk radio station by putting down other ethnic groups other than themselves. To me they sound like a bunch of black supremacists of their black culture in the ghetto.

I think that Clear Channel is making a big mistake by letting WVON and their talk show hosts DJs by targeting racism and their prejudices towards the President of the United States, other government leaders and to other ethnic people outside of their black culture. I don’t understand why clear channel is doing this? By letting WVON moving up to AM 1690, and dropping it real oldies format. There will be lots of WRLL Real Oldies listeners will be calling in complaints to Clear Channel in regards to WVON’s negative talk format.

I myself, would rather listen to Tommy Edwards & Larry Lujack with their comical routines rather then hearing Sharon McGhee making her prejudice on other ethnics out side her own black culture. I believe in equal rights toward all races and all ethnics, NOT just sticking to one that is your own kind of culture.

Thank you very much

Latest 12+ ratings from R&R: WVON has three times the numbers of WRLL, despite a part-time schedule with no afternoon drive and 1kw/250w of power to 10kw/1kw WRLL. Don't know demos, but I bet they're a little better on income--and 'VON has always attracted the leaders in the black community.

Real Oldies is dead. Give it up.

And do you have an actual transcript of this 5 a.m. program? And even if they did say these things, it is in the last hour of safe harbor, at least as far as indecent language is concerned.

Real oldies going off? Thats a crime! i've been listening to WRLL from San Lorenzo, CA for two years.

I'm actually surprised that this topic hasn't been getting more attention. We have a station here in Milwaukee that is just like WVON. In fact, their calls are WNOV. I think this was done intentionally out of respect to WVON's work. And, wouldn't you know, WNOV's main mouth piece is an alderman in Milwaukee named Michael McGhee. (I'm not sure about the spelling.) He would get himself into trouble as he led the Black Panther Militia to cause unnecessary out of hand protests in Milwaukee. They even talked about killing all the white people. Now, his son is following in his footsteps. And, he has an objectionable talk program where hate is openly promoted. So, VON or NOV, Michael or Sharon. It sounds like the same station. I wish the FCC would or could do something in these cases. I say keep the "Real Oldies!"

The actual truth is that WVON and WNOV were once owned by the legendary Chess Brothers. Prior to flipping to R&B/Soul in the late 60's, their call letters were WFOX and the format was an MOR/showtunes format. The Chess Brothers, if I remember correctly, were involved in the music business and hard a number of other investments, including WNOV, WVON and WSDM FM. Somebody who knows Chicago radio history can correct me on that...but WNOV was a fine sounding station, competing with WAWA AM 1590 for many years, both featuring personalities, a solid service for the African-American communities and great music.

WAWA turned in the 1590 license when they moved over to 1290 in Milwaukee...becoming WMCS. WNOV continues with their urban & talk format...their signal not bad for being just 250 watts on 860.

no, wnov's signal is not bad at all considering their power. I was driving through Chicago one day back in 98 and had it on the car radio and it's signal was definitely listenable. It's a shame that so many talk stations catering to the African american community spread so much hatred these days. I always believed that these stations had a significant role in providing a voice to those who had none. In the 60's these stations were so vital to the community, uplifting their listeners and telling them that they could make a difference. Granted there were a few that had some hosts/djs who were over the top.

This is a [EDIT] post. Sharon didn't say the things she said. Did she slam Bush? Yes. Was she cursing and calling him these names? Absolutely not. Please, stop the lying.

What you also don't understand is that WVON is the bedrock of the black community. With it going to 10,000 watts, forget the days of a .9. They are going to rock the house. They OWN the black audience, and will show folks that now.

I would be carefull admitting what you say or do this on this site, seems to be alot of FCC lovers and Whitehouse lovers here on this board, and I wouldn't want you to get found out!! (Especially seeing as you listed as talking about the President of the United States) They will take you seriousely by thinking that you are some type of a terrorist and thinking that you're could be plotting an attack against the President at Whitehouse.

see ya

Dear GrampaSquirrel: Thanks for the kind comments about RealOldies, which I loved and keenly miss. I was beginning to think I was the only one. As another poster noted, WVON is the "bedrock of the black community"--which I don't believe anyone questioned. But when I read about the sudden switch from RealOldies to WVON, I understood why Earl Jones didn't care whether he alienated the RealOldies audiences. We are not the people he wanted, so our loss is no big deal.

Real Oldies is dead. Give it up.

And do you have an actual transcript of this 5 a.m. program? And even if they did say these things, it is in the last hour of safe harbor, at least as far as indecent language is concerned.

This reminds me allot of a new station in Michigan on AM 640, another black talk station. From the beginning they were bragging and boasting new programming, new ideas, and more advertisers. Well barely one year later I drop in and listen, if I can stomach that crap, and I don't hear a lick of advertisement. What's that tell you?

Yes Real Oldies is dead, you'll have your stupid talk shows to replace it, but don't get it into your head this will last. Give it a year or two, maybe even three, and it'll be history. Maybe it'll go all Polish talk. That hasn't been tried.

I say turn the switch on 1690, let it go dark, you can't make money on AM broadcasting anymore people, ANYMORE!! God, it doesn't take a genious to figure that one out.

not true. There are many AM'S in the States that are making a killing. WGN consistantly is one of the highest billers in Chicago, let alone the country. Don't tell me you can't make money on AM. There are also many FM'S in the Country that AREN'T making money. Just like there are AM's that aren't. But to say an AM station CANNOT make money AT ALL? That's absurd

WVON has been proclaimed "dead" a number of times down through the years....yet seems to have outlasted most of its critics.

It's clear that you have idiots on this board.

WVON has made money. Lots of it. You think it'll be dead in two or three years? Man, you're a fool!

This station got a .9 in the latest book with being a part-time station. Second, it DELIVERS the black adult market. Advertisers know that WVON has one of the highest time spent listening averages out of all stations in the market. It serves a niche market very well.

You're ticked Real Oldies is gone. Fine. Get an iPod and shut up.

Prince Rocks has a point. When radio stops providing whatever it is that amuses, entertains or informs us, it's time to give up on radio.

You're ticked Real Oldies is gone. Fine. Get an iPod and shut up.

You're missing the point entirely. Yes, some of us are ticked that the format is gone, as well as the personalities. But, that's half the problem. The point is that it is being replaced with hate talk. Maybe it's just me, but if you have voices on the station that say kill the president or kill white people in general, you shouldn't be broadcasting let alone have a licence. I can't understand why Clear Channel would want to gamble their licence on this stuff![/quote]

Hi Brian, - I just had a friend e-mail me about what you wrote - confused that it was something I had written. Respectfully may I ask that you please add your Wisconsin location under the "Forum Profile Information" link on the profile page as a way to avoid further confusion. Thanks Brian.

Clear Channel is selling the station to WVON. I don't think Clear Channel cares what goes out over the airwaves, as long as it puts money in their pockets.

The rules are that WVON is under contract with clear channel for 5 years, before the station can be sold to WVON. That's what the Program Director of Clear Channel had told me about 3 weeks ago...

Well, then CC will have to deal with the problems or muzzle the commentators. Either way, I hope the experience is expensive and painful for them. They've made their deal, now let them choke on it. (Who's bitter? Not me!)
