I know not much has happened with WVOT, but last I heard (funny...since nobody is hearing anything there) my colleague had contacted MK Smith about a month and a half ago (about early march) and was told that they would be back on the air in about a week...that would have put it about mid March. To date, they are still not on the air, as we are about to step into May.
My colleague (in Indiana) called me to see if anything had changed, and I told him that it was as silent as it was in October. I think their inability to get on may have a lot to do with money, as MK seems to refuse to tell anybody why the station continues to not get back on the air. MK has personally told my colleague that they WOULD be back on the air in a period of time, but then that time passes and there is nothing. My friend told me he would call him back to see what is going on, but I mentioned to him that I don't believe you will get a sincere answer, since it seems obvious they are keeping things too close to the vest.
It has been 6 months since they have last been on the air, and I can imagine it is more than just engineering problems. I think a lot of it has to do with money, since they never seemed to invest it into the station when they should have. The last time I was inside the WVOT building, it looked a mess, and it really looked like they were letting it rot away. But because the station barely made money (through bad management) it just got worse, and you wondered how long the building was actually going to stand.
If WVOT is going to get back on its feet, I think MK has to be willing to allow people to help the station, instead of trying to keep it a secret mission, and let qualified people step in and help them. Until he does that, I just really think he will keep telling my colleague "we'll be back on real soon", knowing it isn't so true.
Of course, they COULD possibly come back on this week... who can tell? But I won't be holding my breath. We will see.
