This is kind of a random question, but I got sent a myspace friend request this morning on the page for my radio station in Georgia for a radio station listed in Greensboro as "B97.7"... Here's the thing, I grew up in Greensboro and don't remember there being a signal at 97.7, and had a friend try and dial it in today and she said it was almost completely static... the same from another friend in Raleigh. The myspace page lists them as WVQB... Alternate calls are listed on the page in another post at WKQA, but can't find anything anywhere else on the net to support the claim. Apparently the station was launched earlier this month... Anyone got any info on this, and is it even a legit station? The myspace page in question is at: myspace.com/b97fm

I ask if it's legit, because the FCC website doesn't return results for either set of calls...
 
Haha, Okay, so I answered my own question... I finally broke down and sent these guys an e-mail, with the following response:

"We are North West of Greensboro, NC in the town of Stokesdale. B97 is only a 150 watt station. In other words were low-powered fm. We dont cover the Greensboro area."

So, there ya go... an LPFM out of Stokesdale...

For an LPFM, they have a pretty agressive myspace page... Also surprising that on their page, they claim to be a Greensboro station... Huh.

After checking the FCC's FM Query page, they have no station, active or new on 97.7 in the Stokesdale area. There is a new translator station application listed for Wake Forest around A&T and W249BZ is located southwest of Greensboro, both are class D's. The calls WVQB are not listed for any station in the country.

I am 7 miles from Stokesdale and if this was a 150 watt station, with the antenna on the ground, I should be able to pick up something. All I hear is splatter from 97.5 in all directions. I am beginning to think this guy is a pirate. There are beginning to be more and more of them. Slick webpages don't mean a thing.
 
speaking of pirate FM's in Carolina... in the Charlotte metro a year or so ago, wasnt there like several pirates showing up? can't remember exactly where I read that...anyone in Charlotte wanna elaborate or give an update to the pirate FM's there if they still exsist?? just wondereding -surprised there aren't many that show up in the Triad or Triangle ..given that there are several large colleges. i dont know, simply a thought :)
 
God, I wish there were some "Pirates" in the Triad..We could sure use some decent radio! I can round up a couple or three or 4 or 5 Collins and Gates Xmitters, if anyone's interested!

Between Satellite radio and Pandora on the iPhone, why risk it. Pandora allows iPhone users to stream their favorite music to their iPhone with ads for free or no ads for a very small fee.

I remembers a TAMS Production Promo back in the 70's taking about Super Niche Radio (think Pre-Teen Gay Punk Country); it's almost here and once the TV stations give up their analog spectrum, the flood of wireless applications will begin. Broadcasting could end up at the bottom of the pile.
 
Hey Dubba Don, I remember that Tams fake Promo stuff. It was Punk Country: "I want to whip your cow, I want to show you how". They had a bit about a balding Elton John with another comeback attempt. It was way ahead of it's time. I wish I could get a copy of that. It was priceless.
 
Hey Ape, the transmitters aren't the problem. Finding 4-400A's might be. You don't think this guy might be selling ads to anyone in touch with the signal do you? What a way to make spending money. Why didn't I think of that.

Why buy old technology (tubes) when the Internet is full of transistor DIY FM radio station kits. Just Google FM pirate radio and it fills up! It is truly amazing.

If this guy is a pirate, as soon as Clear Channel and Max Radio hear about it, they will get the FCC to shut him down like they did up in New England a few years ago when a pirate had the stones to put up billboards about "his" station. What a moron.

I guess it's just the "old-timer thing"..Always thought tubes sound better than transistors.. I have several old tube radios that have a rich warm sound..Also some Crown Power Amps, that I think will knock the socks off any transistor stuff.

My room mates and myself had a "Pirate Station" in Gainesville at the Uof F during our college days..We were quite sucessful. Built it out of a Heathkit color bar generator. Strung the antenna from the top of the Towers to the ground..About 800 feetr and had a hellava signal in Alachua County.. Ah Yes..WZAP..Our downfall came when the Arbitron came out and we beat the local rocker WGGG! Voila! FCC on the Scene.. Just got a hand slap although with a promise to never do it again...Right!
 
there was a pirate in greensboro on 97.7 running a strong mix of reggae and Caribbean music from about november 2006 to late/mid summer 2007...transmitter was somewhere near the airport, I believe off guilford college road near the "carwash", was where the signal was strongest...the station had NO processing whatsoever and was often either one channeled and or full stereo but distorted, they used to run during the week at nights and 24 hours on the weekends..they were running advertisements and everything, rumor has it they were running around 300 watts...either way, they was putting a signal into winston salem and high point...I loosely knew the guys running it and apparently it was close to the FCC coming down so they went on ahead and shut it down quietly...

I didn't think B97 would come in at all, considering WQOK on 97.5 out of Raleigh and another hip-hop station (is it still called Power 98, or what is its name?) on 97.9 going down toward Charlotte. ???
