WVTS Terre Haute

Okay, maybe I've asked this question before but I'll ask it again. I worked at WVTS when the broadcast studio was in a house on U.S. 40 west of West Terre Haute. I started in March 1977 and left in May 1980. The one and ONLY reason I was eager and desirous of working at WVTS was because I heard that it had been purchased in December 1976 by a group of 12 Christian business & professional men and that the format of the station was to be a mix of clean secular adult/contemporary music and contemporary Christian music along with 60-second drop-ins meant to challenge people to consider Jesus. All this on a 50,000 watt FM station. At my interview in March 1977, GM Bob Rouse confirmed that that's what the plans for the station were. It never happened. I finally left 3 years later.

MY QUESTION IS THIS: FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO LIVE/LIVED IN THE TERRE HAUTE AREA AT THAT TIME, DID YOU EVER HEAR ANYTHING THAT WVTS WAS BECOMING A STATION THAT WOULD BE PLAYING A MIX OF MAINSTREAM & CONTEMPORARY CHRISTIAN MUSIC?

Never heard that but it wouldn't surprise me if that was their intent. It also isnt suprising that it never happened. The owners of that time wanted to be clean but they also wanted to make money. It was interesting to see just how "holy" some of those people turned out to be, but that is a story for another time and place. They did try to keep it clean, Like A Virgin, Papa Don't Preach and others were a no-no on the play list. Sugar Walls really wasn't allowed ;D. Some songs were played but once they were edited. You should have seen some of the work that had to be done to do a song edit on a Century 21 automation tape. Once they sold , anything was ok.
