Just tuned by and they are back on the air with a syndicated
Spanish music service. Very heavy transformer hum in the background.

I just caught a station break, and with the Spanish I've been able to absorb between
Sesame Street and shopping at Lowes, I was able to figure out that it was not a
syndicated program, but a simulcast of Birach's WSDS, LaExplosiva 1480 in Detroit.

In other words, he's running WSDS' audio over an ISDN line, running local ID's on a timer-set cart machine, and probably having them do readings until he can get something permanent and local in place. I look for a Pittsburgh version of La Explosiva to come on the air in the near future. I can't say I'm all that surprised.

I remember that episode of Sesame Street that taught all those Spanish terms! :D

Is there a big enough Spanish-speaking population in Pittsburgh to mount a local version of "La Explosiva"?

You could serve that population with a Part 15 Rangemaster mounted above Broadway Ave
in Beechview.

I also heard about a week or two ago WWCS was possibly going WSDS Explosiva 1480 from Detroit.

In a way reminds when Beasley Broadcasting owned 930 KRTH-AM in LA and spun the station off to Liberman Broadcasting to become La Ranchera 930 AM KKHJ now KHJ.

Rare Oldies and Talk 1460 AM WPON simulcast would have been a nice fit for WWCS with its 5KW signal. WPON is currently off the air for signal upgrades, and is simulating programming to sister 1160 AM WCXI Fenton.

Pittsburgh radio is getting more interesting and unusual by the day, it will be interesting to see where the next shoe drops on the AM dial here in the Burgh. Maybe A 24 hour Yodeling station format simulcasting programming from the Central Alps will pop up.

I now want to take a trip to Berlin Ohio and have lunch at Heines Cheese Outlet after listening to your post!
I had 540 on the way up river tonight, I thought about stopping at Taco Bell in Steubenville for dinner.

Are you kidding? More interesting? The 11 people who pay attention to these stations all post here.

NO!!!!!!
several of the Pittsburgh Pirates will probibly listen. maby they could sell spots to that Mexican resturant inside Station Square (if it's still there).

First of all, I seem to recall Birach thinking Pittsburgh was ready for Arabic-language radio some years back.

Perhaps he thinks he can get a Pittsburgh affiliation for the Steelers' Mexico City network.

And here I thought the craziest news of the day was WKHB-FM.

That's why I asked when kenhawk1160 brought up the possibility of a local version of La Explosiva...I figured the Spanish-speaking population in Pittsburgh was rather low.

But Birach has done some crazy stuff before, and he owns the programming. Maybe he'll rotate 540 as a sample of some of his other stations until he gets an LMA suck...er...client.

He runs an Arabic format on 690 in Detroit. Sounds like Radio Baghdad.
It's a bit disconcerting to tune by there. For some reason I get the feeling
that language can't be spoken, only shouted.

I've enjoyed a lot of the music on Spanish format stations when I've sampled
them in other cities. The music on LaExplosiva however is not good.
