WWDP, Shop NBC, now transmitting in HD with SD subchannel

WWDP, Shop NBC, which has been 480i, SD only - has begun transmitting in HD / 1080i on the main channel as 46-1, and added a 480i sub-channel as 46-2. Both are Shop NBC, which currently appears to be only an SD source. However. it's possible this is temporary, and maybe something interesting is coming...

That station is tough to receive if you live more than about 15 miles from the transmitter in Norwell. It is at only 5 kw on ch. 10 with a short tower.

I wonder if there is a taller tower in the area, and if either WBIN-50 or WNEU-60 would be interested in buying WWDP-46 to transmit from that taller tower and use their new acquisition as a satellite of the New Hampshire-based parent station, to get it on more cable systems, especially south of Boston.

Is there any particular reason WWDP is allocated such low power and HAAT? Nobody that I know of is duking it out for that particular spectrum. Would it be possible for them to up their ERP and HAAT and become a real signal?

Thanks!

Maybe that's all the power they asked for. Lot's of stations are only running the minimum that will let them do must-carry. Advertisers are mostly not interested in viewers who can't afford cable or satellite.

At one point, WWDP held a permit to increase power from the current 5 kW to 11.9 kW and allowed that permit to lapse. They evidently are unconcerned.

Speaking of WWDP, why didn't WWDP relocate their transmitter to Newton, MA like most of the Boston TV signals are broadcasting from. Also, why 5kw, why the low power? I'm surprise that WWDP didn't use RF-46 after the post transition, but keep RF-10. Everybody knows VHF TV in digital world are prone to interference and more receptive to picture distortion.

WWDP 46.1 is now on Comcast channel 818. Though if you have the X1 and have auto-HD activated, it doesn't work, at least not yet.

Everybody didn't know at transition, it took awhile to really show up. As you may remember, WHDH operated on RF-7 for awhile before learning it wasn't going to work out very well & moving back to RF-42.

As I think Trip was suggesting, I don't think WWDP really cares that much about their actual OTA coverage. It's their theoretical coverage that gets them on cable & satellite, and 5kw on RF-10 gets them all the theoretical coverage they feel they need.
