WWE and "Smackdown" off CW schedule

"Smackdown" off CW schedule

This quote from the link posted above says it all:

Another issue that led to the CW’s decision to drop Smackdown was that the show was entirely young-male oriented and then network was not able to use it’s Friday night telecast to promote its female-skewing Sunday programming.

DING! DING! DING!

"Smackdown!" is the only program on the CW that my father and brothers-in-law watch.

Can we say UPN Redux?

Can you imagine: former UPN affiliates (specifically in NY, LA and Chicago) which were left out of the CW deal airing "Smackdown!" in their area come the new tv season?

Only time will tell...

I personally am hoping it joins an NBC-Universal Cable Channel.

And I know the perfect one; BRAVO!

I can also see it on MyNetwork TV as well.

I watch monday night raw about every week. I watch ecw some weeks but as a fan of the real ecw, I mean the original ecw, the watered down product is hard to take.yes , as suprising as it seems the new ecw is a watered down version of the old.

I quit watching smackdown almost 2 years ago.I would rather see all the "brands" (raw, smackdown, ecw) as one program with all the wrestlers as opposed to the artifical rivelries between the brands.

If its mynetwork, what a step down. To think a few years ago, smackdown almost went to FOX. The reason they didn't, was because fox wanted it live, and wwe couldn't do it with the production crew everyweek.

I really hope it doesn't go to MY. WCTX-TV (MY) channel 59 of New Haven was our UPN station prior to 2006, yet I doubt I'd start watching them again.

...no comparable competition = crappy product. The only surprise here is that it took McMahon this long to feel the effects...

Actually, I think the WWE would be a better fit on MyNetworkTV, as it has gone from the female-friendly telenovela format to more of a demographic mix (Whacked Out Videos and IFL Underground definitely skew male), than it was on the CW. As for ratings going down, I don't think they would be in trouble, in fact it may even be a boost to MNT (the Harlem Globetrotters special that aired two weeks ago garnered around two million viewers as a whole, which was near CW levels for that night).

Speaking of targeting demos, I've been reading where the CW is now targeting young women which means a lot of the programs that are on their now

(Exception of Girlfriends, The Game, Gossip Girl, and One Tree Hill) will more and likely be off the air.

I too feel that the WWE and MyNetwork TV would be a good fit because they won't challenge the big five in terms of ratings as theirs are not posted

on the Zap2it.com website for some reason. And on top of that, they could put Smackdown opposite Monday Night Raw, if they wanted too, on Monday

Nights.

I want to clarify that. I would like all the wrestlers on one brand. not just one program. smackdown did pretty good when raw and smackdown had the same wrestlers.

Chance of that show running opposite their own product is a big fat ZERO. One, it would make no sense and two, There's an occasional "supershow" where both shows get taped at the same arena.

As for the demographics, it may indeed be a better fit compared to when the network started. However, what % of the country gets MY and their programming in real time...and not as a subchannel on a network station's digital subchannel? Here in New England, the only fulltime MY affiliates are in New Haven (WCTX) [Hartford/New Haven], Derry, NH (WZMY) [Boston/Worcester] and Lewiston, ME (WPME) [Portland/Poland Spring]. I think MY is on a secondary basis in Providence with their FOX affiliate.

Kinda off topic, but the reason all the wrestlers can't appear on the same show is there simply is too much talent. The mid-carders just wouldn't see any air-time.

As for Smackdown the show, I think it should move back to Thursday nights. Who watches TV on a Friday?

"Smackdown"...

With the TNA show "iMPACT!" on Thursday nights, Vince just might look at that possibility as a way to stir up "competition" (nothing is beneath Vince).

I would almost bet against "Smackdown" getting cleared on another NBC Universal outlet, in spite of their partnership. IIRC, there were rumblings of Sci-Fi axing ECW (it was first contracted as a limited series, but Sci-Fi has since renewed it). I'd doubt NBCU wants any more pro-wrestling 'spread'.

I hope Fox picks it up for selfish reasons: Our community only got UPN through DirecTV, and I finally got to see the show regularly thanks to The CW on cable. If it moves to MyNetworkTV, it'll be out of sight, out of mind all over again!

"Smackdown"...on MY??

Interesting you mention that...

In the Fort Myers market, UPN used to be on a low-power station (seen on DBS) and a cable-only channel (yes, two outlets). Since the time when UPN ceased, the low-power station became a repeater for the Univision affiliate. The cable-only channel picked up MY. Outside of cable, the only other way to watch MY is via DISH Network's WWOR "MY 9" (seen on ch. 238).

If you don't have cable or subscribe to DISH Network (and subscribe to WWOR), you're SOL!

It will be interesting should FOX pick it up and air it on MY.

Chances are The WWE's Smackdown may go to Versus. Ironically, There's NO chance in Hell it's going to NBC, where the latest "Saturday Night's Main Event" was tanked by the peacock after it had no choice by putting it in SNL's Time slot. Another possibility: it might go to USA Cable-which is home to its flagship show, "RAW".

What about syndication?

If WWE should have trouble relocating Smackdown to a new network, why not just distribute the show itself to local stations? They've done it before, what with shows like Afterburn and The Bottom Line, and they could just as easily do it again....

Bottom Line and Afterburn were all recap shows with Funaki fighting Juventud Guerrera. You can't have top notch superstars like the Undertaker fighting Batista in syndication...

It will land on some decent network. ECW brings in some of the top numbers on Sci-Fi I believe. Almost any WWE brand is the highest rated or one of the highest for each respective network...

Did you even remotely think before you decided to type this? I would say NO. You DO realize that they are both WWE's products, don't you?

There is no way they would allow "Smackdown" and "RAW" to air opposite each other. That suggestion is just plain stupid, to be quite frank.

Not to mention logistically difficult. "Smackdown" tapes on Tuesdays, IIRC.

I predict MYTV picks it up. They're desperate. And it would certainly do better than the stale movies, generic reality and celebrity gossip shows they show.
