WWE name change

I had seen this in more than one place. The Wrestling Observer mentioned this as well. Why? Because Vince wants to push fluff over actual wrestling? Oh wait...he already does that! He has non-wrestling "talent" Snooki appearing at WWE WrestleMania XXVII tonight in Atlanta. If the second "W" no longer stands for wrestling, would that make next year's showcase at SunLife Stadium in Miami? WWE W-Mania XXVIII? What a joke! :(

Blame the World Wildlife Fund for the 2002 name change. The Wildlife group goes back to 1961, while the WWWF was created in 1963. The wrestling company had an agreement where they could use the WWF letters domestically and World Wrestling Federation in other countries. Clearly that was violated many times and they took Vince and company to court. It's so sad when they alter of fuzz out certain elements on their own footage from 2002 and earlier. Damn evil panda! (LOL)

The question was actually rhetorical and facetious, but thanks for the history anyway! :)

Wouldn't the wrestling group killed them to add an extra "W" to get back to their roots and call themselves "WWWF", instead of becoming "WWE", which was the first step on them becoming lame?

Another factor is been that Vince McMahon is so hell-bent on wanting WWE be recognized as an global entertainment company, as opposed to what they've been for nearly 50 years...a wrestling company. Anyone who has followed WWE/F through the years already knows about their failures outside of wrestling, but yet they continue to downplay what's been their bread and butter.

He's been trying gradually over the years to remove verbal references of "wrestling", with terms like "sports entertainment" and the references to the wrestlers as "superstars/divas" or "sports entertainers". Even most recently, they took a reporter to task (from TVWeek.com) for referring to WWE as a "wrestling" company, in regards to Drew Carey being elected to their Hall of Fame.

I can just remember one of those interview DVDs from years back, when Ted Turner bought World Championship Wrestling, he called McMahon to pretty much gloat, "Hey Vince, I'm now in the wrestling business". Vince replied, "that's good, Ted...but I'm in the ENTERTAINMENT business." The seriousness in Vince's reaction was almost priceless, and it's certainly telling how bad he wants to be accepted in mainstream media.
