WWE Network

Let's see, we've got NFL Network, NBA TV, NHL Network, most recently MLB Network, networks dedicated to college football conferences, I think there's even one devoted to the MLS... but WWE! Therein lies the void!

" Our business was down, the product was becoming old and stale " sez John Cena.
Great way to increase the Three Stooges mentality by having a guest host of the week doing bad comedy. OMG!
Last night's RAW I counted about 20 minutes into the start of the program with the sadly recycled DGEN-X doing childish antics about Vinny Mac's birthday. And a horribly embarrassing ' boxing ' match with Hornswaggle vs. Chavo Jr.
Hey, what about " wrestling " ?

Hey, what about "wrestling?"

A quote from the article:

The chairman of World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. doesn't even like the word "wrestler" anymore.

McMahon never liked "wrestling." He used to ridicule Ted Turner and his "rasslin'" at every turn.

I understand that. But really, ' sports entertainer ' exists in Vinny Macs mind. The rest of the world will always know them as wrestlers and pro wrestling. Strip away the light show and fireworks and that's what it is.
Even Mc Mahon doesn't have the clout to change that.

If this launches, what happens to the classics channel they have now? As for a stale product? I hear ya! I was at the August 3rd edition of WWE Raw (at Mohegan Sun Arena) and it was awful! Jeremy Piven made the show even worse. Except for maybe Shaq on July 27th, why should they bother with the guest host thing anymore? Geez! :(

Shaq's appearance was obviously the best of the bench, because he actually follows the product...not to mention that he acts like a big kid at heart anyway. Piven and that other guy with him had no place or business being on WWE Raw...his biggest goof was referring to SummerSlam (the second biggest event in WWE next to WrestleMania) as "Summer Fest". What's even worse...Bob Barker is another potential guest host for an upcoming episode of Raw. Now, I loved Barker on The Price is Right like most everyone else, but he'll be as out of place there as Jeremy Piven was.

Also, anyone who has followed WWE programming in recent years should notice that wrestlers (oops, I mean sports entertainers) that have suffixes in their names don't use them...examples being Ted DiBiase, Jr., Chavo Guerrero, Jr., Rey Mysterio, Jr.; John Cena himself is a "junior". I've heard from a couple of places that Vince McMahon, for whatever reason, doesn't like the "senior" or "junior" designation.

As for the WWE Network...they certainly have the hours of material (probably a good 35 years worth at least), not to mention that they own the video libraries of many of their competitors (Jim Crockett, WCW, the original ECW, AWA). The biggest issue, of course, will be what they'll charge to the service provide to carry it.

I think the reason is that Vince himself is a Junior and you'll still hear some older wrestlers/fans who knew Vince's Dad refer to him as Vince Jr. or just Junior.

Mysterio isn't actually a "junior"; Rey Mysterio Sr. was actually his uncle.

Actually, Misterio (WWE) is a junior; his uncle was simply Rey Misterio. "Mysterio" is how it's spelled for the American (and English-language) market. Remember: it's a gimmick.

As for Guerrero: his old man (Chavo Guerrero) was billed by the WWE as "Chavo Classic." Pathetic!
I remember when the old man worked the Florida circuit with his brother Hector.

I think Bob Barker is a little more of a 'sport' than you imagine. You do remember his role in Happy Gilmore, don't you? Barker would probably have fun hosting Raw, hanging out with the Divas. Plus, there's no movie, DVD, or TV show for him to hawk. (Though if he doesn't close the show with an appeal to have your pet spayed or neutered, the WWE writers will have seriously dropped the ball.)

I just don't know if there's a demand for a dedicated pro-wrestling channel. I know I'd be interested in WWE 24/7 or perhaps something like TNA's "Video Vault".

Out here in L.A. in the early 70's, the Guerrero Brothers, Chavo, Mando, & Hector were a staple of the NWA wrestling at the Olympic Auditorium where we'd go see the Friday night matches.
Also on staff at the time was a very young Roddy Piper who feuded with the Guerrero's. He doublebilled as the Masked Canadian and spoke Spanish also! LOL!

That comes to us by way of FOX Soccer Channel, which covers soccer in general since many countries around the world consider that to be "football".

Cheers :)

Better yet, why should ESPN keep the Classic channel going? I think they should just rename that to ESPN3 & give it the original ESPN2 format in an effort to compete with Universal Sports before that channel starts getting a huge following IMO.

Thoughts?

Cheers :)

I doubt that will ever happen. ESPN doesn't care about the "Niche" sports. The only show tennis during grand slams, only care about golf if Tiger is around, last week I dont think I saw a single highlight from the Solheim Cup even with Michelle Wie going undefeated. I can't stand their year-round coverage of football, extended coverage of basketball, and their scandal of the day news story. I have no idea why they care about soccer all of a sudden. Thank god MLB Network launched. Do I even need to mention the NHL? I cant wait til October so I can get all the season's hockey news and highlights in a professional manner on the NHL Network and not the 90 seconds Sportscenter gives to 1 hockey game. Even High School football and basketball gets more coverage.

Sorry about the rant, just not much of a fan of ESPN anymore. I would love to see a network devoted nothing but the "niche" sports. The ones you only see during the Olympics, mostly just Handball. But it won't be an ESPN network unless they decide to buy it like they did ESPN Classic.

I would assume if they make the network it will more than likely replace their on demand channel.

To be quite honest, I hope it works in terms of them getting on basic tier.

I hope it will stick to showing wrestling and not change their format like all of the other channels have done lately.

Stick to wrestling or as Vince McMahon would want it to be "Sports Entertainment".

And they STILL poo-poo all over the Arena Football League (Not that it's a big ratings grabber to begin with, but IF YOU DO NOT EVEN GIVE IT MUCH OF A CHANCE - Uhhhhh).

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised (No make that SHOCKED) if the AFL didn't wind up back on NBC via Universal Sports next season (And in case you're wondering, I don't even see them landing on Vs. with its extensive NHL coverage & TBS wouldn't be the least bit interested IMO).

I must admit ESPN doesn't exactly have the same appeal to me either although I will tune in if there's nothing else on. Ditto with FSN (You try watching THE SAME FRIGGIN' PROGRAM on TWENTY different channels (That's approximately the amount of FSN outlets & affiliates that DirecTV has on its listings).

That said, maybe Universal Sports will fill the void left behind by ESPN2 shortly after it first launched.

Here's to hope that the brass at NBC Universal doesn't find a way to somehow BLOW IT with their shot at a 24/7 all sports channel.....

Cheers :)

You are kidding, right?

The AFL is toast.

Without intending to disrail the thread--that could be a bit premature. The main AFL circuit is bankrupt and is 'suspended indefinitely'. However, the AF2 minor league system operates independently, and that circuit played and finished its season just last week without a hitch. It remains to be seen what might ultimately happen in terms of league membership and TV--as KTU_Fan noted, ESPN holds a small stake in AFL (but not af2) operations.

What would necessarily stop ESPN or even the NFL/NFL Network from acquiring not only the TV rights, but the rights to all of the AFL's trademarks/intellectual property in bankruptcy? A reorganized league owned by either would be a source of relatively cheap programming for the NFL offseason or perhaps ESPN2. It's probably not likely, but I doubt its that impossible.
