WWFF 93.3 Huntsville - Stunting

Looks like Cumulus has pulled the plug on 93.3 The Wolf after 3-and-a-half years. The station is currently stunting and promising a new station Friday morning at 9:33am.

The stunt right now is teasing a classic country format named "The Storm", but we all know that stunting is stunting and that doesn't mean anything.

Stay tuned. I will.

This makes me wonder if that recent thread about Huntsville radio being stale and boring might had something to do with this sudden format change. It's probably just a coincidence though.

As music-intensive as the stunt is, if it ends up being just a WVNN move-over, that will be a big letdown. Why would you promote a big "new station" and appoint a listening time for the format change, only to join Neal Boortz in progress?

Zack, You beat me to it LOL. All I can say is it's about time! I think the smartest move for 93.3 would have been to move WVNN over to it but I think you are right. The stunting is ALL about music so I don't really see that happening.

Blue, I'd love to believe that that recent thread about Huntsville radio had an impact but probably not. I'm sure this has been in the works for a while.

They are stunting with clips from ALL different kinds of music. I've heard everything from classic country, classic rock, 60s & 70s, to r&b & classic soul so far. They keep saying "Huntsville, the storm is coming" and to listen Friday at 9:33am. I'll be listening with fingers crossed for a descent format that will finally breathe life into this DULL radio market.

Let the predictions begin. I think classic country is a possibility. I've said on here before that WQAH's numbers are always impressive for the bad signal they have in Huntsville so a good signal doing classic country would be successful. The only major format Huntsville doesn't really have is a real Top 40 (because we all know WZYP isn't really unless its after 6pm), but WZYP is also Cumulus so I doubt that will be it. I really hope is isn't some form of classic hits music. Huntsville is already WAY too saturated with old / classic hits stations (no offense meant to anyone)!!!

RadioInsight just tweeted this: "Cumulus' "93.3 The Wolf" WWFF Huntsville, AL is stunting with the same loop used prior to launch of Journey's in Cincinnati and Atlanta."

The "Journey" in ATL is 80s/90s, the one in Cincy is 80s/90s/now.

Ugh, just what H'ville needs. More classic hits.

The name "Storm" though could be for a much more diverse lineup. I'm thinking classic country, or R&B would be good fits. Or classic rock.

OK, let's see.....if the speculation is true, this station musically will overlap with:

WAFN, WRSA, WAHR, WQRV, WTAK, WBPT, WQLT.......

and that's just on FM!

Not to mention Cumulus' own WZYP, which plays the "flashback lunch" and 80s on Friday mornings!

Aaaaah, for the good old days, when radio used to be exciting to listen to..... :p

Ron, if anything, this could move those Hot-AC-leaning songs off of ZYP and make it into a true Top 40 like Q100 Atlanta.

Zack, WZYP actually being a real Top 40 after all these years? That'd be great, but honestly I'm so sick of WZYP right now that if that's the plan, they would have to completely change the sound of the station as a whole; imaging, jocks, everything, and make it sound like a totally new station for me to really love it. Maybe even come up with a new catchy name rather than just using the calls. I'll keep my fingers crossed for that. But 93.3 doing an 80's/90's format would certainly worsen the over saturation of classic hits in Huntsville, which is the LAST thing we need.

Anyone thought of a possible Jack FM type station? I'm NOT rooting for that either because it would again have the same problem with overlap with every other stations in the market, but do you think thats a possiblity with all the types of music they are playing during this stunt? It seems to be an hour long loop with almost every format in there, minus current country & rock. I heard todays Top 40 hits for about 10 minutes in the loop with an old Casey Kasem recording talking about all the different types of ways we've bought music over the years from reel to reel, vinyl, 8 tracks, cassettes, and now "the new compact discs" LOL. It was cool to listen to.

Is this format number 933 for this freq.? I can think of 8 right off hand, with Boogie 93 being the first.

Just what we need. Station number 596 in Huntsville doing 80's and 90's... More typical bullsh*t from Cumulus. Dull, lifeless Huntsville radio goes on...

This will be attempt number 2 at 80's and 90's on 93.3. Remember "Mix 93.3"? They went there after they pulled the plug on country "The Possum". They then wen't back to country as "US 93". Then Cumulus bought it and flipped it Urban as "Power 93.3". That morphed into urban a/c "The Adult Mix" which moved to 94.1. Once that move was complete the went back to country a third time with "The Wolf". Now we're going back to 80's and 90's with "Journey"???

Don't get too attached to "Journey" because in 2 to 3 years when this fails they'll flip it again to something else, probably just as pathetic. And the cycle continues...

ahhhh......the history of huntsville - and the history of michael jackson. good stuff. annie....are you ok?

Well, I've been waiting for this day since 1/14/2008, Looks like my part 15 station is gonna be reclaiming the wolf name!
