WWIQ--- 9,000 watts vs 38,000 watts

I am no radio engineer but...I think WKDN carried further in So Jersey at 38,000 watts from Camden then 9,000 watts from Phila...the signal was much clearer down in Wildwood at 38,000 then at 9,000 watts...is this a wise transmitter move?????

That is because WWIQ is not a full powered FM station anymore.

Sure they got a boost in height, and that DOES help but...

WMMR is running 16,500 from One Liberty Place and WWIQ is going to be just 9,000 watts AND lower on the tower.

A Class B FM station is referenced to: 50,000 watts from 150 meters up.

WWIQ is located at 244 meters high which means they can run a maximum of 19,500 watts and be a "full power Class B".

Of course they could stay at 9,000 watts and move up to a height of 347 meters and be a "full power Class B" that way also.

Either adding 7,500 watts OR moving up another 103 meters would make them a "full power Class B" and greatly improve their coverage.

The 9kw signal from Center City is only an auxiliary/back-up site (at the moment). It is expected that Merlin will file to change the One Liberty aux to their main facility, at which time they'll go to a full class-B signal. WWIQ's signal will be (practically) identical to WMMR's when everything is finished, as both are class-B FMs from the same building (WWIQ's antenna is just below WMMR).

In this case, ultimately, yes. Wildwood is not in the Philadelphia Arbitron market. 106.9 could have every household in Wildwood listening, and it wouldn't help them one bit in the ratings. But once the One Liberty site is converted from aux to main (as is widely expected), WWIQ will no longer be bound by the restriction that the "aux" signal from One Liberty must not exceed the contours of the licensed main signal from Camden. And because One Liberty sits several miles to the northwest, that means WWIQ's signal from there will get out better to the northwest - which is an area very much within the Philadelphia market, where extra signal and thus extra listenership *will* count in the ratings.

It's unlikely that the move from Camden to Center City will significantly reduce 106.9's usable signal in any part of New Jersey that's within the Philadelphia market...and for a commercial station, that's all that counts.

Maybe the new site in Philly has an HD transmitter but the Camden site doesn't. That explains how I heard IBUZ the other day on 106.7 and 107.1.
