WWL/870 Off

WWL's massive signal went silent at about 12:40 AM
this (29 AUG 2005) morning (while fielding a caller
from Atlanta, IIRC). It's still silent as of 01:05
as I listen here in Dallas.

WLNO/1060 is blasting in here (maybe on the 50,000
watt day pattern). However, the programming remains
the usual paid blocks, currently a health program
is airing as a potentially catastrophic hurricane
heads to New Orleans.

I lost WWL at 12:44AM. I think it is possible that they changed transmitters due to wind damage. They may have a local signal or they may be off the air.

Does anyone have any news on this?

I was getting WWL up here in Ohio earler, tehy where doing a "multi-cast" with all the sister stations in the area and doing non stop news coverage, but when I left my friends house at 2:30am, I am getting DX from a foreign language station so it appears either their WWL 870 main signal went dark or they moved to a smaller wattage area.

I know the major tv stations down there have jumped ship to baton rouge and other areas.
______________

WWL out as I listen here in Columbus, GA at 3:00am. There's a Spanish station with the ticking clock running s9 on my signal meter, most likely Cuba.

WWL was well heard here (Lincoln County, Arkansas) until 12:45am this morning, then nothing but background noise. Probally a power outage to the transmitter. At 6:15am, nothing still.

Hope the FCC gets some **** and pulls the license of ANY station that insists on running paid programming in an area where a Cat 4-5 Hurricane is threatening. Especailly if other stations in the area are knocked off the air that are performing a public service and being a source of important, live saving information. This includes the pay-for-pray outfits.

Wow, I was wondering about that. They went quick. Damn.

They were coming in loud and clear here in Nashville until the end. I think they were talking to The Weather Channel's hurricane expert. He said on TV today that they went off when he was in a call with them.

I DX'ed WWL up here in Avon (20 min west of Cleveland, Ohio) last night as late as 11:15PM CDT. I did hear on-air that FEMA (Federal Emergency Magagement Agency) would try to equip WWL as best as possible. Hopefully everyone's OK.

Agreed. Or if there is justice, the towers of those station would be ripped down first.

Webcams Off (Was: Re: WWL/870 Off)

As of 1:30 P.M. EDT Monday (August 29th), all of NOLA.com's webcams are out.

According to NOLA.com, all the webcam outages were due to Hurricane Katrina.

When 1060 was still WNOE, I used to get them in Tulsa, OK on the nighttime pattern. I never tried when I lived in Dallas, though it wouldn't be surprising if you could hear it on the nighttime pattern there. If WLNO is running at its daytime power and running commercial programming at night, it's violating the law. It's probably in the clear if it's running at night power. However, I have to question any broadcaster that wouldn't at least provide some coverage of such a powerful storm.
