WWL History (Talk)

Hey Guys:

Would anybody remember what year WWL started there talk format? I do know WWL used to be a MOR station before they went talk.

Thanks
T.J.

I don't know the exact date, but it would have been some year in the mid 1970s.

I have a radio listing from the States-Item from Feb. 1974 which lists WWL's format as Pop Contemporary music.

New Orleans magazine did a feature in October 1978 about talk shows on New Orleans radio and by that time WWL had their long time format of news and talk during the day, country music overnight and paid religion in the evening.

Bob Ruby did mornings at WWL from the fall of 1969 to late 1975 or early '76. Although he started out playing music (as the other on air guys did at the time), within a year he had persuaded PD John Pela to let him go full time talk from 6-10AM. I also recall Eric Tracy doing all talk during the 3-7PM drive time during the early to mid 1970's. Sorry but I just can't recall what they did during middays. CBS Mystery Theatre ran from 7-8PM, religious programming such as Rev Joe Lovelady from the New Orleans area, Garner Ted Armstrong and the Mull singing convention out of Knoxville followed. Charlie Douglas at one time did two shows. The first was a paid program by Ernie's Record Shop from Nashville, then followed the all night Road Gang. WWL at this time had practically no local news or sports coverage. They basically had Maury McGill scavenging news from the TV side and the AP wire. When WWL carried the Saints in those days, there was probably just 45 minutes to an hour each of pre and post game coverage. Very different times, indeed.
