WWL interference

What is the clunk clunk beep beep sounds going in the background on WWL 870? It sounds like one of those time stations like WWV on shortwave. Why would anyone be broadcasting that on the AM band? I've noticed it on other frequencies as well. You can also hear someone talking in the background. Where is this signal coming from. It was very annoying while trying to listen to Katrina news the other night.

I believe this is one of the Radio Reloj stations from Cuba. News for 55 seconds an hour, with a ticking in the background, then a time check with tones at the top of every minute.

The one in question is 870 R. Reloj, Sancti Spiritus.

Cuba is no longer a signatory to the North America Regional Broadcast Agreement.

Those tones, "didahdit didahdit" are Morse for "RR", Radio Reloj.<P ID="signature">______________

And, when the station started, they were RN, for "Reloj Nacional" which was the original name for the station.

Reloj Nacional was the first all news radio station in the world, dating back to the very late 40's, or some 12 or 13 years before the US's first news station, XETRA, would attempt the fromat for LA from Tijuana, Mexico.
