WWLI has flipped!!

Just this minute, 12:10 AM on November 10. The last song played was Nick Lachey's "What's Left of Me," followed by an announcement that Lite Rock 105 is spreading Holiday Cheer 24/7, into "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree."

Thankfully there are only a handful of stations that 'flip to Christmas' weeks before Thanksgiving. How we got started on this trend I'll never understand, but it resembles Wal-Mart Radio retailing practices. I still contend there is not enough variety of music to give listeners 7 weeks of constant ho-ho-holiday hits without them wanting to enter into therapy on 12/26. Just ask any retailer or their employees...or their customers.

WWLI is a great Providence area station with people I know there. The greatness erodes at this time of year (and mind you I've got plenty of holiday music I love listening to); but one way to strike a happy balance and keep greatness in tact is to do what other stations have for years (in fact WWLI did it years back) - infuse the music by degrees in November and December with the last few weeks chock full of Christmas.

Sadly our SECT local WBMW/Ledyard will be 'flipping' soon - if not already. The two stations seem to run neck and neck every year to see who has the title of 'bringing Christmas first' to southern New England.

It's like eating an entire box of Lindt truffles every day, guys 'n gals...great tasting stuff that'll have you sweetly sick before you finish the box!

PS: Anyone actually heard WalMart radio overnights at one of the 24 hour stores? Talk about a media tool in touch with their employees - requests, announcements, etc!

Not sure if they're doing that right now. At the store in Connecticut we've been all XMAS since November 1st. We used to turn off the Walmart Radio Network around 7:30AM (half hour after we opened).

From a business standpoint there's no reason not to flip one station to all Christmas if you're part of a cluster. I hate to say it, but if it works from a sales standpoint it has to be. I do agree with Bill though. There are probably only a limited number of Christmas songs people really wait to hear & even then, there are probably only a limited number of versions of those songs worth hearing.

And after having to endure a trip to Christmas Tree Shop over the weekend & swearing under my breath at the throngs of militant psychotic women with shopping carts stuffed with potpourri & stuffed penguins I'm ready for some serious elf-tossing. Only Domenic The Donkey & Boney M can calm me down now.
