WWNQ 94.3 all Christmas

I noticed that WWNQ, Country Legends 94.3 here inb columbia went all Christmas at 10:00 this morning. I wonder if this smells of a format flip after Christmas.

I was wondering the very same thing and Lite 96.7 never really caught on and I think it was the way that CC marketed it.

Interesting. Just when country music analysts are saying that a young country/adult country split could be viable. See Ross on Radio on the homepage.

Looking at the shares, CHR is where it's at right now.

Gee! Words right out of my mouth. Noticed the switch myself this morning. I sort of got the feeling a while back that something may be up when they started saying they were playing "everything country". What better way to say "Hey we've run out of ideas,so lets just mix it up and see what happens." I really wonder if there is another format that people would even care about. It's all stale. The problem with 94.3 Legends was they never personalized it. I honestly believe that if they had put local people on and took real calls from real listeners maybe it would have made an impact. Too long now radio has been programmed by outsiders (corporate) and the personality has long gone. You can't continue to aim radio at the sales force making money by just running a computer on the airwaves. It's like a wagon without a horse. Load the wagon, but where are you really going. Could someone in Columbia PLEASE step up to the plate and break the cycle of automated/voice tracked radio? Give radio back to the listeners. After all, isn't that where your salaries come from initially? Years ago I worked for some wonderful guys who changed the way things were done in the Columbia market. They bought a station and took a chance and impacted the Columbia market for years. They weren't afraid to make change. It worked for them. Praises to Gene McKay, Bill Benton, Dave Wright, and Dennis Waldrop. They had a dream and it lasted for years. They had a passion for what they did and believed in and did a great job. I am glad to have known them. They helped make me a better person.

I hear that Chuck McKay is back in town as the GM there. If that's true, he was the PD back when 93.5 was an AC Star 93. They also were beaten by B106. And B106 is about the only station in town left that doesn't do the automated, voice track thing. So they would be crazy to take them on. CHR could work, but only if they localize it. If you try tracking or pull something CHR off the bird, you won't find anything with the name recognition of Ryan Seacrest. In fact, no matter what format they choose (if they are changing at all), the question is does Double O have any money to market it?

Chuck was VP/Programming Clayton Radio. He programmed WAAS Star 93.5. But was also first PD of WARQ. Other stops include WHOO-AM/K92 Orlando and Classic Rock KKBB B-Rock Bakersfield, where he also was VP of Programming and PD.

At the time, WAAS was the 3rd AC in the market. WSCQ and B106 were the established players and before the gold-based AC Star, 93.5 was very soft AC WCEZ, which was the #1 or #2 AC, depending on the book. Clayton Radio bailed the Soft AC because they believed the Gold-Based AC was more active and an easier sell. That turned out not to be true. B106 had a lot of heritage, longtime morning man Wood Windham, and the ability to shift between soft AC and warm AC as market conditions dictated. Moreover, WAAS was consulted by Mike McVay. So there were a number of factors that assured that WAAS was not going to be very successful. None had anything to do with Mr. McKay's programming skills.

Forgot to add that WAAS was also running at most 1,000 watts for an ERP of 3kw. The upgrade to 6kw ERP (2,500 TPO), did not occur until WAAS was ready to have a fork stuck in it during the early Fall of 1992.

Re: WWNQ 94.3 hmmm what about Star 94

With NOK voicetracked and ruined by clearchannel, seems like it to could be a RIPE target for the taking. 94.3 (STAR 94) A LITTLE upgrade in signal, plenty of LIVE local talent to bring in and probably chomping at the bit to take at shot at doing what Z-96 did back in the day when NOK was known as Stereo 105 and was on auto pilot during the day. Competition .. How fun this might be to watch!!!
