Chuck was VP/Programming Clayton Radio. He programmed WAAS Star 93.5. But was also first PD of WARQ. Other stops include WHOO-AM/K92 Orlando and Classic Rock KKBB B-Rock Bakersfield, where he also was VP of Programming and PD.
At the time, WAAS was the 3rd AC in the market. WSCQ and B106 were the established players and before the gold-based AC Star, 93.5 was very soft AC WCEZ, which was the #1 or #2 AC, depending on the book. Clayton Radio bailed the Soft AC because they believed the Gold-Based AC was more active and an easier sell. That turned out not to be true. B106 had a lot of heritage, longtime morning man Wood Windham, and the ability to shift between soft AC and warm AC as market conditions dictated. Moreover, WAAS was consulted by Mike McVay. So there were a number of factors that assured that WAAS was not going to be very successful. None had anything to do with Mr. McKay's programming skills.
Forgot to add that WAAS was also running at most 1,000 watts for an ERP of 3kw. The upgrade to 6kw ERP (2,500 TPO), did not occur until WAAS was ready to have a fork stuck in it during the early Fall of 1992.
