WWNQ in Radio Info

Hometown Columbia LLC owner Kirk Litton says, “George Strait is the king of country music and our research indicates that Columbia country music fans want to hear all of his number one hits, not just the last couple. Corporate station playlists like the ones Clear Channel use limit the choices Columbia listeners have when it comes to George Strait. Country music fans in Columbia have missed all of George Strait’s great hits and because we’re locally owned, we can bring them back.” About today’s stunt, Litton says, “Kenny Chesney is a big enough superstar to play Williams-Brice stadium so why would some out-of-town corporation decide Columbia country music fans should be limited to hearing only his last few hits?” Hometown has registered a domain involving Garth Brooks so we can expect a Garth Brooks station tomorrow, perhaps. There’s no reason to believe WWNQ is considering a format flip but is using the stunts to promote its variety and locally programmed music.

I like the moxie, but I'm not sure what they'll gain from it. (listeners? revenue?)
Then again, I did get to use "moxie" in a sentence - so there's that.

From the sounds of it- It just seems like a stunt to get listeners. If it works more power to them, but they are gonna have to do a lot more then just a radio stunt to go up against WCOS!!! From the looks of it they should be trying something with 92.1, but that is just me from an outsiders point of view...

"New" format coming today. They are teasing it between Garth Brooks songs. They are jabbing at Clear Channel A LOT!

The only thing I say is this: Country is a format Clear Channel researches everything for. Everything. Liners, songs, music mix, break positions, promotions. Everything.

Folks that have only been in Columbia since June or July will have a real challenge in programming to local tastes against a completely researched format on a nearly statewide Class C.

I won't even begin to describe the challenges their sales "techniques" are creating for themselves.

COS also has the heritage of being country for fifty years. It's amazing that there hasn't been a second country station with any traction since 96.7 in the mid and late 90s, while Charleston has supported two stations at least since the 1980s.

I think Country on 92.1 would still have a better chance than 94.3. New 92 wasn't THAT bad at first.

If they had any sense, they'd put Country back on 92.1. If all of the owners want to keep turning out these crap formats (The Palm, Carolina 92) on those 2 stations, do it at 94.3.

I don't see the owners lasting maybe 5 years and them sell the stations if no headway is made.

I guess it's finally launched as "The Dude". Steve was right about people trying to do country in this town. It's going to take a lot more than this.

They are also now wide open for many "Dud" jokes.

"The Palm" is a good format. It's also a format that takes time to establish itself.
