WWNQ IS GOING CHR! For Real!

Loading 'a hundred songs I JUST BOUGHT FROM TM HIT DISCS' aint cheap. You are correct that any idiot can do some liners, however, minimizing by observations with the hard assumption that registering domains is more expensive is as bogus as your conspiracy theory. At any rate, my observation carries as much weight as your's 'WHOPPER' seeing neither of us are in the building...are we?

I'm not kicking the change because any change in the Columbia market is good. The CHR format isn't really my taste because I am an old guy I guess, but it does target the younger audience like my kids. Only thing I'm concerned about is without live jocks and real personality or something different to hook that audience what makes it different from WNOK? I'm not running Miller down because I think he's a great guy, but if you were an NOK listener......What would make you switch? Again, I'm not downing or kicking anything or anybody. Hope he can pull it off. Good luck with the flip Tim. : )

At least this is an up beat change for Columbia, is it Country or is it CHR, maybe there was more to the tick tock of the clock than we think.

I've noticed a few things after listening to the stream for a few hours today:

The jingles (from the former N2 Effect, now out of business) are the same as the ones that the late WHZQ in Cross Hill, SC (now WGFJ-FM) had used when they've tried CHR in 2004-2005. The station was also known as "Q-94" as well. The imaging/sweepers are VERY similar to what Q-94-Cross Hill had used when they were CHR.

So my guess is this

A): Someone working at Double O was involved with WHZQ at one point. When the decision to go CHR was made, the jingles and imaging that was used was "recycled" for WWNQ so that it could go on the air ASAP.

Or...

B): This is all a smokescreen, Country will be the "real format".

Excellent points Robyn!

Robyn I would agree but the sound of the station is mighty slick. I'm sure the deal is to play more music get some of the bugs worked out then introduce airstaff etc. Plus, I heard a spot for some car dealer so it can't be a stunt they have clients on the air already.

Song to song the station flow is fantastic and imaging is great.

The Cross Hill-Q94 was very slick as well (which was amazing since the station targeted nearby Greenwood, a city that in recent years has become unfriendly to most radio advertising).

As far as the car spot, any AE that is worth his weight in gold can sell anything, even a "format stunt". I believe that when WHZT in Greenville was stunting as "Q98" before becoming Hot 98.1 in 2001, they had some advertising as well.

WHZQ was Jeff Roper's station. 'Nuff said.

Interesting, I thought Roper acquired the station after Radio Ritmo ceased the LMA on WHZQ back in 2007? Pro-Com owned WHZQ during the Q94 period.

Edit: I realized that the Q94 imaging was probably still at the station when Roper purchased WHZQ.

Eric Chaney was the PD at WWNU here in Columbia at one time so that is entirely possible.

Is the promo voice Eric Chaney who voiced Double O's Panama City station WPFM a few years ago?

My personal feeling/intuition/.02 worth is that CHR is the format. And I have to tell you that what I'm hearing is pretty impressive. A straight-ahead mainstream CHR with good imaging/jingles will give WNOK a serious problem. That is, as long as WWNQ works Facebook, Twitter, etc correctly to market themselves. Adding q-u-a-l-i-t-y live jocks would go a long way to differentiate themselves as well but that should be done carefully. I still hear some very lazy sounding live airshifts everywhere.

As far as other stations re-positioning themselves in reaction to the format flip, well, I don't think much about reactionary programming. I don't believe in letting a competitor determine what I do. And the other guys are going to have to get better. Fast.

This will be good for the market!

Drucifer. Aptly named.

So I guess you weren't just throwing it out there after all. Sorry if you spent a bunch of money on TM Hit Discs, which last I checked were 14.95 each. You can give up a couple of avails, which Double O has plenty of, and get download services like MPE from Mediabase and save a ton of money.

So. Going country. Are we?

One car dealer. Someone should check where the station traded their vehicles from. That would probably explain that.

This thing has been fishy from the beginning. Several new posters on this board just pop up and say their sources are telling them WWNQ is going CHR. Each of the new posters is magically armed with Tim Miller's bio and resume to defend his honor. It has been good reading and with ten pages of posts, it certainly is more mentions than Double O has ever had in diaries. Again, I will admit I was wrong if this CHR thing holds. By the way, to give credit where due, it sounds really good.

If its just a stunt, then its one of the best this market has ever seen! The station is a great sounds CHR. We'll see, if its a stunt they would say so soon I would think. They could have sold the stunt, I've done that myself over the years.
