Scott, lighten up. It's just a radio message board. :)

Great story. Proof that small market radio can survive and thrive if done correctly. A challenge for the smallest AM in Tennesse would come from a little 250 watter in Pikeville, WUAT they don't even have night time authorization.

WOW!...thats a station I've NOT heard abt in years....WUAT AM 1110 (Upchurch & Turner) in beautiful Pikeville,TN (Sequatchie Valley)...i worked there 1972-73....good memories.

Last i heard....they were now located in the corner of a NIK-NAK store on Main street & using a media player for music.
NO "LIVE" programming.

Surprised to see this thread still going for years. And sorry to say that WWON was destroyed by the new owner. Should have never sold it!

WWON is back on the block, and priced to high to sell. The station was destroyed, and now their trying to get out and make a profit. What a shame!!

What are they asking? How bad is it? I looked at the station, but it was snapped up before I could get down to perform a due diligence.

I'm hearing that WWON may be up for sale again? Anyone know what condition the station is in? How bad did the owner destroy it if he's wanting to sell it this soon?

Maybe a more important question would be: What condition is the MARKET in as a result of the recession?

SMALL POTATOES BROADCASTING COMPANY, LLC is selling Oldies WWON-A (BIG OLDIES 930)/WAYNESBORO, TN to JUKEBOX MEDIA LLC for $110,000.

Indeed it is, however the last two years of P&L's are on the FCC site. The revenue dropped from almost six figures are last year, to down to the mid 20's range. Could have been a much considerable lost on the sell, but a couple of Maryland stepped up and overpaid for it.

Interesting that they didn't redact the financials. And I wonder what a couple from Maryland thinks they are gonna do differently in order to get the income up?

And that's what's wrong with the business. Small market radio doesn't require a lot of hands-on care, it DEMANDS it. No owner/operator worth his salt should expect to step in from out of town (or even in town for that matter) sit back and expect to collect a check for minimal effort.

I can assure you here in Butler, two of our four owners are here every day, in addition to after hours and weekends. Our enterprise is profitable because they're busting their humps alongside ours...leading by example. It's hard work and you can't be afraid of it. I hope these folks from MD will approach it with this kind of diligence.

I'll keep the thread going. The FCC finalized the deal the other day. This station has been passed around more than a two dollar pistol the last couple of years. Is it a combo of the community not supporting it and the owners can't run it properly? Or do the people that have owned it go in there with the best intentions but just don't know how to make it work.

KnoxBob: You just have to spend a day or two driving around town and visiting with the people.

Better Operators for the most part have apparently steered away from the station.

Radio has always benefited from automobile advertising. My memory from my tour of the town is there is not a single new car dealer in the entire county. I don't remember seeing any used car dealers that would make much noise.

Small Town Radio used to also do well with locally owned supermarkets. (Maybe that doesn't work these days.) My memory of the town is that there was one not-too-robust grocery store of any size.

Pardon the rather crude way of expressing it, but my tour of the town made it clear to me that way too many people there are still pissed-off that the F.M. was sold off and now is for all practical purposes is part of the Florence/Muscle Shoals, AL market.

It's a rural market, the kind where we used to sell advertising to feed & seed dealers, to tractor dealers, to fertilizer applicators, etc. There is some farming there but the best farming is probably along the river in the northwest part of the county which is an area where stations from neighboring markets really reach in. Much of the county is an area where people make a living with a chain-saw. I don't know that tree based agriculture really is a great base for radio revenue.

1250WTAE may have some views of the market contrary to my observations, but I think 9 out of 10 people wanting to own a radio station would look at the market, mutter something about "It comes so close...." and walk away.

It really needs someone who is connected to the community by birth, by family or something. A locally based woman married to a hometown guy with a good job or owning a good business might be more content with the level of income the station could produce year after year.

When I tried to visualize how my wife would fit into the community, and how the community would fit into her life..... and how would she fare in that community if I up and made her a widow some night.... that is when I walked away and quit trying to prove I could make the thing work. By that I am not saying it is a bad community. I could see it was NOT her kind of community.
