WWOR/9 Bringing Back News At 10 PM

Starting June 27 - roughly two years after they've moved its hourlong 10 PM newscast to 11 PM, partly due to economics, and so as not to conflict with big brother WNYW/5's newscast at the same time - WWOR/9 is moving their nightly newscast back to 10 PM, though it will remain at the half-hour format which it obtained upon the move in 2009.

Ironically, the name of WWOR/9's newscast will be "The 10 O'Clock News" - which is what WNYW/5 has called its nightly newscast for years until working the Fox network branding into the title.

When WPIX first moved its newscast to 10 P.M. back in late 1967 (with Reynolds Aluminum commercial pitchman Rex Marshall as anchor), they too used The 10 O'Clock News title - only in their case it was contemporaneous with then - WNEW-TV's then-nascent newscast that premiered that March.

Five words: PIX 11 News at Ten. Never mind what's now called Fox 5 News at Ten.
 
Given NewsCorp's interest in re-establishing WWOR's newscast, rather than squashing it at 11pm - just a thought, how about WWOR adding a 9pm newscast as well. 9 at 9. It could be catchy.

As far as the MyNetwork lineup, NewsCorp could just make it available one hour earlier (7-9), and let affiliates choose whether to air the programming starting at 7pm or 8pm.

A 9pm newscast would anyways be attractive to a lot of people that go to bed by 10pm. I'm sure a lot of NJ commuters into NYC have the tv off by 10. With 4pm and 11am/11:30am newscasts becoming more common in the east coast, the only newscast missing here is the 9pm newscast.

Chicago and many markets west of the east time zone have 9pm newscasts.
 
Years ago, WWOR had "News 9 Prime Time" airing at 8 PM. They were the first in the area to have a newscast in primetime - or at least between 8 and 10 PM. So why not reinvent the wheel?

Probably too much competition from other primetime network programming. I can't see people giving up watching their favorite shows to watch the news instead.
 
If/when MyNetworkTV ever goes away (big emphasis on ** IF **), perhaps the Fox people should look at what CBS has done with their second-station independents in Los Angeles (KCAL-TV) and Dallas/Fort Worth (KTXA) and program a prime-time block of news. They have the staff and the resources, so why not do at least two hours of news in the evening? KCAL (WWOR's RKO-era sister station) has done this successfully for about 20 years now, and the New York area can generate enough content to fill the airtime.

Also, channel 9 could devote at least a half-hour exclusively to New Jersey issues, with additional help from Philadelphia sister station WTXF-TV. That should quiet the Jerseyites who say the station has done very little in covering the Garden State.

Of course, the Foxies on East 67th Street (or 1211 Sixth Avenue) will most likely claim they don't have the money to do it. But they SHOULD investigate it nevertheless.
 
What, and serve WWOR's city of license? That would make way too much sense.
 
Notice that I said it would be part of a NEWS BLOCK, not a stand-alone, New Jersey-centric program.

If NJN is taken over by the Steve Adubato/WNET tandem, as has been proposed (see this post: http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=175102.msg1691902#msg1691902), the politicians will be screaming bloody murder because Big Thirteen plans to do away with NJN News. They are going to want a NJ-licensed station to give them an NJ-focused newscast on broadcast TV. Even if there are numerous other options available.

What really doesn't make sense is that both WWOR and WNET's licenses haven't been reassigned to New York City, where both stations belong. The FCC should just do it already and spare these stations the drama of being beholden to New Jersey interests when they could care less.
 
I watched the new 10pm news for the first time tonight. They are very NJ focused (which is a good thing). I did not see a single local news story outside of NJ during tonight's newscast. Also, if you look at the background behind the news desk, the photo is of the Jersey City skyline, which I found interesting since most stations use NYC for the backdrop.
 
It all comes back to money. It costs more to put on news than air something else.

At the end of the day you have to explain to your stockholders why you aren't making as much money as possible.

Even if the news made a profit, it doesn't make a different. Stockholder's today are only concerned with bottom line profits.

If you come to a meeting saying "We made a million dollars," the first questioin is, "Why didn't we make a million and one dollars?"
