WWPR & Hip Hop Lyrics

This is a pretty cool piece of news. All Access reports that Power 105.1 will discontinue airplay for records that promote "degrading images" with their lyrics. There was a pretty significant discussion on the morning show regarding the change yesterday. It will be interesting to see what is deemed "degrading". Does telling girls to "shake their money maker" qualify as degrading? Where do you draw the line?

Having said that, the fact that a successful hip hop station in Market #1 is taking a stand like this seems to be a step in the right direction. I hope this will influence other radio stations to do the same.

the only issue I see with that is that Most hip hop has these degrading images. Does that mean that Power will be Almost an All R&B type Station Will they be segueing UrbanAC? Will that Leave HOT97 As the Only Hip Hop Station Once again in NYC?

Actually It was due the Push of Al Sharpton and the likes and the threat of Boycotts that Forced WBLS to Go Urban AC

....the fact that a successful hip hop station in Market #1 is taking a stand like this seems to be a step in the right direction.

No great sacrifice, now that rap is on it's way out anyway. The bigger question is what will replace it./u]

So far I have noticed that this week, they have not played a song that was in their heavy rotation previously - forget the title/artist, but there's a line where he refers to "pimpin' on these hos" (with the h-- word edited out, I should add) and also another one where he refers to "serving Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown", drug reference?

WWPR would be smart to lean more toward classic hip-hop, reaching more toward the '80s and '90s and mixing in some currents that would appeal to fans of the rap of this era. If what they are saying is true, not only should they stop playing degrading hip-hop but they should cut out all the hip-pop junk like Nelly Furtado, Justin Timberlake and Cassie - leave all that stuff to the Z 100s and Hot 97s of the world. I'm really surprised that absolutely no one plays any pre-00's rap in this market and WWPR would be wise to take advantage of this hole in the market. Right now they sound nearly identical to Hot and of course it wouldn't be smart to follow BLS's lead and go full-on R&B, so this seems like the most logical direction for them to take. Of course, if the above statement is true, that means we won't be hearing much West Coast gangsta rap, but there's a lot of solid material from the past two decades that's worthy of airplay in this market.

WHATS NEXT ! SHUTDOWN PORNO"S, R-RATED MOVIE AND THE NEW YORK KNICKS ! AMERICA LOVE BAD [EDIT] !

Check that - they just played this song now... Song btw is "Get Buck" by "Young Buck".

But if Power 105 will lose the current Hip-Hop and R&B format, then Power 105 will go Classic Hip-Hop of all-time 24/7. So Hot 97 will keep the current Hip-Hop and R&B format of all-time with repeat workday 24/7. So on 2009 it will celebrate 30th Anniversary of Hip-Hop/Rap music of the greatest time of all.

I think America has had enough. Do we need to have yet another reminder of the events this past week? Have a little compassion.

I'm not blaming it for the VA or Houston incident, but I am blaming it for an overall degredation of American Society. Human beings have been evil from the dawn of time. But, rap music has made profanity and degredation acceptable. And, God forbid someine like Don Imus should say anythig, right?

Bottom line, our society is being poisoned. I'm not blaming rap music, etc. But, it sure isn't making things any better.

Not that I would really dispute it but where did you get that information? Secondly WBLS was never a hip, hop station. It was classified as urban.

WBLS was a HIP HOP Station . Back in the 80's WBLS and 98.7 Kiss FM was New York HiP HOP Stations . Emmis Purchase 98.7 Kiss FM and change that station into Urban A/C ( Protect HOT 97 ) . WBLS was still a Hip Hop station ( Hot 97 vs WBLS war , WBLS Started calling Hot 97 a slave station , WBLS Black Owned,Black Airstaff, Hot 97 White Owned ,Black airstaff ) until mid to late 90's .

I'm trying to find favor with this development, but for some reason this smells fishy. Then again, anytime I hear or read something in favor of censorship, I shudder...no matter how much I might be against what the next person is saying, preaching, or believing. While I'm not a fan of how hiphop music has become a minstrel show, the real problem is what the record labels AND all related media outlets alike are 'allowing' to pass as hiphop.

The balance of exposure has been ridiculously tilted, showcasing imaginary thugs instead of thought-provoking talent for too long, that's what it comes down to. I hate to call on the 'back in the days" reference, but just some 15+ years ago, hiphop on the radio was far more balanced even with all the arguments between 'underground' and 'pop'.

Yes, on occasion we heard NWA's rants against brute police force, but this was always complemented with De La Soul or Black Moon getting equal airtime. This balance I speak of has not been heard on commercial radio in at least 10 years. Even WBLS and Kiss have their own extremity practices in place by pretending that "OLD SCHOOL" mysteriously rubbed out 80s and early 90s hiphop from their memory banks. Their target audiences grew up on hiphop, so this also escapes me.

Give some thanks to the Telecommunications Act for this mess we're in. Maybe the primary beneficiaries of this Act should be censored. Maybe THEN I can get back the WBLS and Kiss I knew..the ones that were unaffected by "nationally syndicated" sounds. The ones that weren't afraid to have Tony Humphries and Red Alert spinning on the same frequency.

Just before WBLS flipped to urban AC it was not a hip, hop station. It was an urban....not urban AC and not rhythmic/chr.

R&R is taking a stand on Stations like Hot97 PGC Etc That the Companies label Rhythmic but Playlists Programming is heavy Urban. R&R Actually Labels them Urban now Regardless of what the companies say they are

I went out to Queens last night, to a restaurant that I have business dealings with. At a table nearby was a 30-something black male and what I assumed to be his wife and two daughters. The daughters appeared to be early and mid-teens.

The father set up one of those small DVD players at the end of the table and a few minutes later you could clearly hear rap videos playing, It was the usuall stuff, some idiot in ugly, baggy clothes flopping his wrists and "cussing" into a mic.

Here you have a classic illustration of garbage-in-garbage-out. How can these two "parents" expect their children to have any sense of taste or to know how to behave in public if they are raised on trash like this.

I spoke to the manager who knows them and he told them to turn it down. He later mentioned that they came from a nearby "family housing hotel" which has no cooking facilities so they are given a restaurant allowance. How nice.
