WWRM AND WDUV

Does anybody else think both stations are skewing older and softer? WWRM now sounds very different from MIX . Lots more 80's soft gold even overlapping WDUV. WDUV has dropped newer music again for more Diamond and Manilow. I think more differentiating Magic from Mix is a good move.

I am talking to myself. I guess this board has become a refuge for dudes who dig sports and Rock meaning you cant really generate interest discussing these stations unless the flip to talk, sports, or Rock. Meanwhile, CC has restored jingles of sorts to 933FLZ. ;D

Funny how those changes you mentioned not only happened around the same time, but coincided with the first wave of snowbirds returning north...

Well, as I mentioned before, some of us older folks (60) would still prefer that the Dove would go back to more instrumentals ( vocals only 2nd song into set or one every quarter hour) as they were when the Nelson family put it on the air and owned it years ago....At least it would be DIFFERENT from every other so called "soft" station around..... Then it would also be smooth, easy and relaxing as it used to be... OH WAIT.... you can never go back... Damn, sometimes I just hate getting older...

Not only more instrumentals but some adult standards, folk music, or whatever. In other words, a little variety. Mix them up a little - like WGUL used to. It doesn't take a PhD to figure out what kinds of music are compatible with each other and to blend them into a nice mix. I'm bored with this homogenized and pasteurized thing that passes for radio. Current radio is designed to sound good if you only listen for a day or two. But day in and day out, week in and week out, it is repetitive and boring. (Or at least it seems that way to me.)

Agreed... The ONLY way to do that is to have an expanded music library, and to USE IT...Something that just about EVERY terrestrial, HD and satellite station has FAILED to do... Same old VERY LIMITED rotation.. AND IT SUCKS, PURE AND SIMPLE...I am SO sick and tired of hearing the same 400 songs just about the same time every other day... There is SO MUCH available music out there, from every decade and genre that it just doesn't make sense to me...Even if it wasn't a top 10 hit.. if it was on the charts for any amount of time, people WILL remember it as long as it is rotated correctly and only heard every once in a while, and it doesn't get overly repetitive...add enough of these songs, and you create MEMORIES from a particular era or time....REALLY MIX IT UP !!!

Have to agree with DWTPA97 and FLWFG; WDUV is very bland and predictable, very much like the Eagle; very predictable and lots of repetition with a limited playlist.

As far as XM/Sirius satellite radio; if you have their online service; they now have MYXM, which allows you to personlize all or most of the music stations; one station allows you to select more vocals and less instrumental or the other way around as well as more familiar hits or less obscure hits.

On the 70's channel, you can select mostly or all early 70's, mid 70's or late 70's as well as less disco or more disco.

I do find myself listening to more of the XM online, CD's or my iPod and less terrestrial radio these days... at least when I'm in St Petersburg; when in eastern Hernando county, I actually listen to AM radio during the day, flipping back and forth between WVLG 640 and WLBE-790 Leesburg and sometimes WVLG at night.

btw- WDUV HD2 is great if you only listen about 2 hours per month; they play the softer rock from 1966 - 1974 but only about the top 15 songs from each year; their playlist cannot possible be more than 150 hits; after listening several hours, you'll hear repeats.

Yes, flwfg..this aging thing is interesting as we become a demo no one wants. The other day in my car it hit me that at one time all the presets were fixed on stations of my taste. Gradually as formats changed each one was eliminated to the point now that only a couple are used. My dad who lives in Baltimore and is 90 loves big band music. In his mind that music is king and hard for him to comprehend that the audience is small. In explaining to him that his demo isn't desired it hit me that MY demo is no longer desired! Just look at print and/or TV ads. No old white guys! Read JC Penny is on the verge of going under. Have you seen their ads? No one looks like people in my life. Going after "the right people" isn't the answer all. If the whole world..radio..TV..retailers...are all going after the same person..that leaves a bunch of people who no one is going after.

Yes, and the presumption is that the older generation either has no money or doesn't spend it, but that's not completely the case. And besides, with all of the stations formatting for just one (younger) target group, that pie gets sliced up into some mighty small pieces.

For anyone who would like to refresh their memories, I again include a link to a WGUL aircheck from 2002 that shows just how good local music radio can sound:

Incredible, wasn't it?

In a word YES WGUL up until July 2005 was an incredible station and live and local Monday - Saturday until 7PM, even in mono, they had a good sound quality and a good variety of music and when they broadcast in AM stereo up until around April 2000, they sounded even better........... but alas like many stations here and nationwide, they are a shell of their former selves.

I do listen to 860 now, when I'm out of the area......... dx'ing purposes only to see if either Cuba or the French CBC station out of Toronto is the dominant station.

Frank: I grew up on Bog Band music with my parents, then when I started in radio @ 1490 WTRL which still played a lot of it in 1970...Learned to appreciate a lot of different music when I was forced to play it at wherever I was... Country when @ "Your Kind Of Country 1420- WBRD.. even some classical when I had to play it ... Still had a problem with any hip hop or the like as well as hillbilly, a lot of bluegrass and southern gospel.. I guess working in different formats gave an appreciation ...

WDUV is very bland and predictable

Ha! I find this comment funny particularly because WDUV was designed to be exactly that. It's a background easy listening station. Or at least it used to be.

Speaking of The Dove, I had a weird dream last night that I was listening to a radio which was picking up stations of the future. Almost the entire Tampa Bay radio dial had changed. 99.5 was AAA, 103.5 was dance, country was somewhere else. But one thing that remained the same was that 105.5 was still The Dove. However, they were playing Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger." Now I wonder how long before WDUV actually evolves to the point that they actually play that!

Glad I was able to give someone a laugh! (even if it might have been at my expense :) )

I never realized that bland and predictable was their goal; that said, they are certainly meeting that goal; maybe it could be the start of some new liners: Music your way - Bland and predictable - and Cox does seems to excel on that concept on the Dove and at least one other station in the Tampa/St. Pete market.

Years ago, I know the type of music was predictable but occassionally I would hear music that I had never heard on any other station (i.e. Don't Cry for Me Argentina - Karen Carpenter's version); this was when their tower was still in Snead Island and they were on 103.5 - so that was years ago.

Drt's point is well taken - although background music should not be obtrusive, being bland and predictable is not one of its goals. In fact, WDUV's reported ongoing tweaking of their playlist shows some recognition on their part of the dangers of that. But they still don't quite get it. I would still suggest that WDUV needs a much greater variety and a much more expansive playlist.

Some sort of Variety based format without fear of attracting an older demo would work in this market. Music of Your Life, in my opinion, had too many trainwrecks and was Roger Miller to Glenn Miller and played too many novelty tunes. You can do adult standards as almost everyone has recorded album. The station could have enough "kitsch" (is that the hip term)? to be relevant with some younger demos. You can play the cream of the Big Bands as well as hit instrumentals. The station would be unique.

I agree so much with Frank F...We may be older but we remember great times and can sing along with them. Come on...some local station must want to do this...and call me...I got the format ready to go. Plenty of experience doing it...did it for 21 radio stations including DAE. Liked the cream of the crop big band remark...always have believed in that..you can skew way too old and that is a major turn off.

Apologies for derailing the thread, but... I think FLZ's new jingles sound awesome and fit the station's energy perfectly. As a matter of fact, I spent a couple days in the Tampa area last month and thought FLZ sounded fantastic overall. The jocks, the imaging and most notably, the musical balance were all on point. I did notice that the frequency of recurrents in the clocks seems to have increased.

Hot sounded very focused and trendy, but FLZ just felt very comfortable while maintaining a sense of excitement. They never disappoint when I have the opportunity to hear them. MsMusicRadio, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I agree. Jingles keep the sound flowing and are better than the same repetitive liners used on Cox stations. I was disappointed that CC seemed to be going in that direction. The jingles from WABC are as memorable as the music. I hope Cox keeps at four air shifts on HOT cause their tendencies are to run jock less. Both stations do sound good, but FLZ. Sounds the best

Even years ago, WDUV leaned softer IMO. I like it now, but liked it better then.
Say 2004, 2006 even.
I never heard of it before 2004 and in The Villages, it is fringe, but listenable.
