I think it's been 5 years since I caught this station and even then the signal only got out about 10 miles.

I think they are still on the air.The signal doesn't get out beyond the city limits. The tower is an antique self supporter. The station needs all new equipment from the ground up.They called about a year or so back when their volumax went out,I gave them an old dap processor. It helped the sound a little.

The FCC database shows WWSD-AM 1230 as being licensed and on the air. Last
time I was in Quincy, it was on, but the signal was very weak and didn't reach beyond the city limits. I'd imagine the ground system is ancient, like the tower.

WWSD is liocensed to TUFF-STARR JAM COMMUNICATIONS, INC. and received its license renewal in 2004. I'd imagine that Christopher Starr, the former WTCL-AM
operations guy, is the "Starr" of this company. WWSD oparates with 1000 watts-unlimited. Being one of those "graveyard" frequency stations, the small coverage area isn't too surprising.

WTCL is licensed to Metz, Inc., an outfit based out of Illinois. It is my understanding that Don Metz, who is shown as the president of the company, is
living in the Tallahassee area. WTCL is playing black gospel early in the morning during a time slot where Chris Starr used to be on.

WWSD and WTCL appear to be two totally separate, independent stations now.

> They are independent of each other.Lloyd Ausin aka Christopher Starr was a minority stockholder in the 90s.The owner lives in Cairo,Ga.The tower and ground both are in dire need of replacement. The old Bauer 707 xmitter put out a kilowatt,no idea how much vswr,no meter on the bauer to measure it,and no bird meter in line.We worked one night several years ago,and couldn't do anything with the signal.Audio was great, just a signal that dropped off the face of the earth several miles out.

I think this is in an area of very poor ground conductivity, like a 1 or .5
...1230 is a good frequency for a classIV however and should make about 8 to 10 miles a night... Just curious if the tower has a slant wire (shunt feed)? A lot of early towers like this was and usually works very well...
