WWTN Host Changes

Afternoon host Brian Wilson retires at the end of the year. The station is adding KRLD's Chad Benson to mid-day:

You call him KRLD's Chad Benson. A few months ago, KRLD 1090 Dallas added him to the noon-3pm slot. Until then, Benson was just doing a three-hour weekday national show from his home in the Dallas area. He is syndicated by a small company called Radio America. But the KRLD program is supposed to be a local show, or at least that's how KRLD billed it. I think most of us figured Benson would do a show exclusively for Dallas for a few weeks. But then he'd use segments of his nationally syndicated show so he wasn't working six hours on the air each day.

Now I see WWTN Nashville is also adding him. And it's also claiming his show will be exclusive for WWTN, not his national show. Here's the paragraph from InsideRadio.com

>>>National radio host Chad Benson will fill the 9am-12pm hours with a live and local program while continuing as host of Radio America’s “The Chad Benson Show.”<<<

It will be interesting how this all shakes out. Will he try to do local Dallas and Nashville segments for KRLD and WWTN for, let's say 15 minutes? Then run the rest of his national show on each station?

It's not unknown for a host to do a local show and a national show. Lars Larson does a show for KXL-FM Portland and a separate show for national syndication. Todd Schnitt had been doing a national talk show as well as a local Tampa show for WFLA. When he moved to WOR New York for mornings, he still held onto his syndicated afternoon show. But he only lasted a year or two at WOR. Last year, he ended his national talk show, just doing mornings now on Classic Hits WRBQ Tampa.

Now I see WWTN Nashville is also adding him. And it's also claiming his show will be exclusive for WWTN, not his national show.

From what I can gather, he's not leaving KRLD to do this show for WWTN. But they air at the same time. So it's hard to say exactly what's going on.

We also have a similar situation going on with Bob Lonsberry, who appears to be doing several shows around New York State.

Sad news today, as Johnny B's position was "eliminated" by the out of market bean counters. There have been some very interesting comments from the on-air staff (online and on the actual radio) that were shocked, angry and not holding back. Sure, it's radio. But Johnny B, right before Christmas. Painful for all involved in the market.
