WWV Goes Digital

R.I.P., Jane...

I just called +1 303 497-3235, and it appears they are still using human beings for the announcement recordings. Any word on when the robo-speech will actually be deployed, or is it going to be radio-only?

("Kate" is also the title of my text editor programme. Just thought I should mention that.)

This is only for the geophysical activity updates at the 18th minute of each hour. Jane Barbe (WWVH) and Lee Rodgers (I think the voice of WWV) aren't going away yet...

I know that. Jane died of ovarian cancer in 2004, and even still, I like hearing her voice better than that of Pat Fleet when I have to call up AT&T. Jane was generally more "friendly" sounding, I think.

[size=8pt]Calling that f0ne number again, just now, I heard a human doing the announcement. Which is why I wonder about when they're going to deploy it, because the ARRL article confusingly makes it sound like they already have (and shortwave's too noisy around here, on any of the WWV frequencies, to aircheck it.) And maybe they indeed have, for all I can tell.....
