Not exactly if you consider the differenes in the business model -- CC escapes cost of maintaining a sales force and overhead of billing many smaller accounts and gains more stable cash flow projections.

Also, the revenue to the preachers comes from a different market segment -- the willing-to-donate public as opposed to ad-buyers. When tax deductions and religion come into play, conventional market economics are no longer part of the equation.

For reasons above, as much as I'd rather see a conventional format supported by spot sales, I can understand why one would choose to lease blocks.

A friend of mine was PD there way before CC owned it, and even back then the brokered religion was by far the most profitable aspect of the radio station. The PD wanted to put Pirates baseball on at night and was vetoed by the GM.
______________

Granted, advertising dollars tend to stay near home, but surely national advertising could be sold, particularly during the evening and overnight hours.....WWVA could also become a regional leader in news as well. While using airhours for preachers and other informercial programming can be lucrative, that programming serves a very small, insignificant audience. WWVA could improve it's position if they made positive changes like these.
______________
