Yet another surprising and interesting development has taken place in the Great Knoxville Frequency Shuffle of 2010: the new website for News/Talk 98.7 FM is http://www.newstalk99.com The obvious question then becomes: Why 99 instead of 98.7?

1) They're going to simulcast on 990 AM

2) They're going to simulcast on 99.1 FM

3) They're going to simulcast on 99.3 FM

4) A cybersquatter has already taken www.newstalk987.com

5) All of the above

Please discuss...

6) They registered it long ago when they were looking into upgrading 99.1 and leaving talk on that freq. (that's the actual reason.)

So does this mean that South Central is making a move?

No, because they don't own the frequency, but it is an opportunity for South Central to make a few bucks off of Citadel if they want the domain name badly enough. If not, it gives South Central an opportunity for an unsuspecting NewsTalk 98.7 listener to log on to newstalk987.com only to be directed to a South Central station's website. Free advertisement for B97.5, WIMZ, Jack-FM, or The X.

Speaking of The X, doesn't Pirkle still own 94.3 as well?

I don't know. It might be a sign of things to come. I can't imagine an unaffiliated corporation, and competitor, registering a domain, publicly, for an entity they weren't in control of, or in the process of controlling.

Happens a lot. Usually it happens because a competitor has something the registering party wants, and they hope to make a trade. But sometimes it happens for revenge, or merely because competition can be nasty.

When the internet was still pretty new (to anyone other than Al Gore, anyway!), Randy Michaels and Jacor registered every combination of domains they could think of for their competitors in Cincinnati. It was a ploy to steer people to their stations. If you were looking for Q-102, you were likely to be redirected to Mix 94.1's site instead.

I suspect South Central is trying to get Citadel to pay for the domain, though I suppose it's possible they could be launching another talk or sports station. Of course, the Team already failed once.

I am surprised that South Central would get in this mess.

Word on the street is that the South Central GM is actually quite embarrassed about this..

www.newstalk99.com was the WNOX website dating back to the 90s. That was the first site I ever heard local radio streamed on back in the dial-up days. Nothing new here. It's always redirected to the WNOX site.

It just dilutes NT 98.7's brand even more. News Talk 98.7 on air but your website is newstalk99? Yeah. And people still think of you as WNOX even though there will be a "new" WNOX soon?

Again, it's been one of their URLs for years. It has always redirected to their site. They are exploring alternate URLs for when the conversion is complete. They will not be identifiying themselves as NewsTalk99 again. But they also, in the interim, didn't want to continue having "WNOX" as a part of their primary web address, so they switched the old address from a re-direct to the primary. It's a keystroke.

True. And they will have no affiliation with WNOX after 8/1. With that being the case they've already removed the WNOX calls from all on-air identifiers, save for the TOH Legal ID, the vans, the website, the sales sheets and all other "official" applications.

South Central had nothing to do with the registering of the URL's. That was the imaginative efforts of a couple of their employees. The domain name that Citadel was seeking has been turned over to them with no money changing hands. No harm, no foul.

It took Citadel almost 2 month's to figure out that they needed a new website??? WOW! Congrats South Centrel employees, you must have smarter people working for you. Maybe Citadel needs to hire these guys to run the show, or at least call to find out what there next move should be...

In their defense, Citadel corporate told them that they had to do business as if they were keeping the WNOX calls up until last week. Corporate is still convinced that the WNOX calls and identity belong to them. That included continuing to use the URL wnoxnewstalk.com and having the exterior sign changed to read "WNOX-FM 98.7" as it still does as of this morning.

The logical thing for Citadel was to transfer the calls WNOX to 98.7 when they were had still the LMA. There is an old saying “the Devil is in the details”. I have not seen Citadels P & L statement for the Knoxville cluster, so letting 100.3 go might be a good thing, but they sure have poorly executed this move! Who is Citadel’s legal counsel? Unless some $$ changes hands they will never get to use WNOX on the air after Aug. 1. They can (very stupidly) use the URL wnoxnewstalk.com it is theirs. They have to be careful about any signs after Aug.1, because WNOX 100.3 and it’s call letters are not theirs.
