WWWN becomes WIQI

THAT'LL bring the listeners in. ::)

In a PPM world, unless your call letters are part of your brand, no one cares.

It's not 'branding' per se, but in the pre-digital days 100.7 FM in Tampa was known as W 101 (with the call letters WIOI), and before the Duv and Warm FM - W 101 was the AC station in the bay area.

I always figured a W101 would make a return somewhere. This wouldn't be the opportunity, would it? (As if...)

A call letter change won't mean anything unless listeners know who you are and what you're doing. It all comes down to the on-air product. If listeners don't find anything compelling to make them tune in FM News 101.1 as opposed to WBBM on 780 AM & 105.9 FM, nothing will change.

FM News 101.9 in NY isn't making a dent against long-established CBS all-newsers WINS and WCBS-AM either. :)

Time Out Chicago agrees:
The old line about putting lipstick on a pig came to mind Wednesday when Merlin Media moved to change the call letters of its FM News 101.1 from WWWN to WIQI. Until last July, the station had gotten along fine as WKQX for 34 years. One Merlin exec told me the new call letters “match up with the frequency better,” although he acknowledged that the move was mainly cosmetic. With the latest Arbitron ratings showing the station mired in 44th place with a 0.3 percent audience share, you’d think they might have more pressing concerns. Like coming up with a decent format, for instance.

I listened to their kid brother yesterday on-line, after hearing that WEMP had hardened up their news approach some since Barbie News fell off its first high heels. I had to sample their stream, as the only time WEMP ever would come in here, in the virtual shadow of T-102's stick, would be during some apocalyptic tropo.

Not a bad listen. I didn't care for most of the voices, but not everyone can be Wayne Cabot. One gal had that annoying, giddy uptick PLUS that accent where a short 'a' is substituted for a short 'e' -- as in, 'Thirty-savvin degrees', etc. Maybe that 2011 Valley Girl crowd is still their prime target, I don't know.

But the dynamism and teamwork of WCBS 880, or KNX, wasn't there. Even WOR 710, the loudest NYC station here in the day, sounds more authoritive.

Was wondering if WIQI/WWWN came off the same way .... kinda laconic at times, deer-in-headlights, somewhat uncertain. I haven't seen too much about that station or their ratings posted here.

Do you really think that CBS will blow out a perfectly successful format on WOGL to simulcast KYW? I don't think it's likely. Sure, nothing's impossible, but the ownership situation in Philly is quite different than it was in Chicago.

This is a case where Merlin will have the signal advantage, but it's still an uphill battle for them. CBS' all-news stations tend to be excellent (and KYW is); as a result, their listenership is quite loyal. It takes a lot for someone to break that habit. Even on an FM (versus an AM).

So far, Merlin's FM News 101.1 here in Chicago hasn't gone anywhere. Sure, there's been no promotion - but the numbers are still disheartening.

The people in my family who listen to news have sampled FM 101.1 a few times. Not worth listening to, even during Bears games. There are some good people working there. They need to be given a decent format to work with.

Is this Guy Bauer fellow the normal morning drive news co-anchor?

His delivery is subpar. About as pleasant as sandpaper being taken to my ears.

The lack of local hard news reporting capabilities is also noticeable. Substantive local news content is replaced by rip & read national stories off the wire.

On the whole, there is zero reason for me to listen to this station instead of WBBM.
