What's the deal with the WWWW call letters moving to 1310?

Let's see...

When a sation gets sold, the owners "park" cool calls on another station. (Kind of like they did with WXDX)

Any guess on when 102.9 gets sold?

And to whom?

If they've parked WWWW on the AM side, that doesn't necessarily mean they're selling WWWW-FM, they just want to make sure they have the calls covered on the AM side as well. That's a very desirable set of call letters, and CC securing them on the AM side ensures no one tries to grab them for that band.

If I recall, if a station owns a set of call letters, even if it's only on one band (say FM), then another company wanting to use them for an AM station needs to seek permission from the owner of the FM to use the calls. Same goes for TV call letters. Therefore, as long as CC has the WWWW call letters anywhere in its stable, others have to seek permission to use them.

Incidentally, I didn't know they were moving the WWWW calls to 1310. The website still lists it as WDTW.

Yes, that's true... but taking those call letters on the AM band themselves prevents anyone else from even asking about it. It's just an added layer of security.

I didn't know about the call letter change either.

7/24/2006: WWWW call sign moves to AM 1310 from FM 102.9 Ann Arbor. Station is still using WDTW positioner.

How the hell can CC give a totally different set of call letters over the air? Why would they?

Oh, wait - we're talking CC here. They'll find a way.

And has WDTW-FM dumped those calls yet (since they switched to country)?

It would be more accurate to say that WWWW-AM is sharing the calls with the FM station. WWWW-FM has not changed to any other set of call letters, at least not yet, if they ever will.

102.9 is using WFOR FM from what i heard last night
1310 uses WWWW AM

Clear Channel knows how to wack up the radio world dont they

Announced today. Sept 1, the Ann Arbor stations go to Cumulus

It's worth noting the irony of the WWWW calls landing on 1310. The original WWWW was one of the stations that help push 1310, then WKNR, out of the Top 40 format.

Speaking of Cumulus, has anybody heard about the woman who quit on the air. Was making $6 after 6 years!!!!!!

Just curious, do you pathetic excuses for human beings at cume-less have the least little embarrassment paying a human that? Shit miniumum wage is more than that now!!!!!

Thank you cumulus for setting a NEW LOW in the radio industry.

What I find especially interesting in all of this is one distinct possibility: WWWW-FM 106.7. How much you wanna bet... just how much do you want to bet... that CC changes the calls on WFOR-FM a short time before Sept. 1, moves the "W-4" name over to 106.7 and tells Cumulus if they don't like it, tough?

Inicidentally, I wonder just how much convincing it took Clear Channel to get CBS to let them use the WFOR calls (WFOR-TV is the Miami CBS O&O, and as far as I know, it was the only station to have the calls until now).

If they were going to do that, they would have done it from the start. Maybe they tried but weren't able to, but I don't see CC putting in 3 months and all that money in branding the station as "The Fox" to go and change it again.

Anyway, the calls don't mean anything anymore. All you would hear is WWWW-FM Detroit little blurb at the top of the hour which no one pays attention to anyway.

This is Clear Channel we're talking about, here... not everything they do necessarily makes sense :)

Sure it's a waste of money to make the change so late, but those are heritage calls in Detroit, and W4 is a heritage name in Detroit. If no one cares about the calls, they'd certainly care about the name. Believe me, I have every reason to think that "W4" was truly the winner of the "name the station" poll they took. Clear isn't so stupid as to just ignore that... and I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to go with the next most popular name until the Ann Arbor sale went through.

...but if they ignored it once...

My point being that they deliberately ignored it specifically so they could do a complete 180 and make the transition after the sale to Cumulus. It's a little pointless and not quite budget-friendly, but neither are a lot of the things they do ;D

I'm not saying it's right to pay her only $6, but keep in mind this was in Alabama. The cost of living is much lower in Alabama than it is in Detroit. Shoot I made more than $6/hour ringing up groceries at a supermarket in Connecticut, but than again the minimum wage in CT is $7.10/hr or $7.40/hr.

And then, of course, you have "Alabama North" 100 miles west of Detoit (where I am), where $6/hr. is considered to be an upper-class pay rate! ;D

This is NOTHING NEW, gang. If anyone out there remembers WLLZ 98.7 (Detroit's Wheels), when they switched to Smooth Jazz, they parked those calls at AM 560 in Monroe for a number of years. AM 1470 in Toledo also assumed the WLQR call letters that had been a mainstay of 101.5 over there for so many years. When you switch a format and give up the calls, you run the risk of a competitor picking them up, changing to the format you dumped, and then making a huge on-air and publicity campaign out of it.
