BostonRadioWatch is reporting that WWZN 1510 and New York's WSNR 620 will be going to "Blackstrap Broadcasting LLC", an outfit led by Peter Davidson (presumably the same guy that runs Davidson Media Group, owner of 100.3 WKKB in Providence). A new foreign-language format will launch this summer under the new ownership.

Blackstrap Broadcasting, LLC, a newly formed radio broadcasting
company, today announced that it has signed an asset purchase
agreement to acquire radio stations in the New York City and Boston
markets. The two stations, WSNR (New York) and WWZN (Boston), are
being sold by Rose City Radio.

In New York, Blackstrap Broadcasting will purchase WSNR-AM, located
at 620 on the radio dial. WSNR’s signal covers more than 15
million people and is particularly strong in Brooklyn, Queens and
Manhattan. WSNR’s current foreign language and immigrant oriented
programming will be retained and expanded.

In Boston, WWZN-AM, “The Zone”, will be acquired. WWZN is a 50,000
watt day and night signal, located at 1510 on the radio dial, that
covers more than 5 million people and is considered to be one of
the best AM signals in the Boston market.

Peter Davidson, President of Blackstrap Broadcasting, LLC said, “I
am pleased that my Company will purchase these two great signals.
Blackstrap Broadcasting’s mission is to provide a platform and a
welcoming home for immigrant communities on the public airwaves.
As some people in the United States are espousing their unhappiness
with recent immigrants, we feel it is important for those recently
arrived in the US to know that most Americans respect them and
greatly value their contributions in New York, Boston and
throughout the United States”.

“Immigrants are the source of America’s strength and prosperity and
Blackstrap Broadcasting was formed to celebrate, champion and

the russians are coming! supposedly same people who are leasing wsnr want to get into boston market on a good signal which covers brighton, brookline, watertown, newton, malden. "our very first caller on borat 1510 ...howie from wellesley"

Press releases are always over the top, but they're really pushing the envelope here.

"One of the best AM signals in the Boston market"? (Ah, yup!) Sure, it's 50,000 watts feeding the fishies and Scandanavia taboot. Outside of 128...... oh, well....... Considering the potential audience, it probably be best run as a "dollar-a-holler" to cover for the rent (which ain't cheap!). Bon chance, 1510.
 
Ethnic programming is only one of the two formats that will make money for the owner. (The other would be one of the several Cash-4-Christ formats). So, I think they'll have a good chance at serving the ethnic populace AND making money. But be careful.... the Russians in Boston are not as old-country-centered as the Russians in New York City are.
 
Pirates on the SE Expresway at 100.3 FM,101.3 FM,102.9 FM and 105.3 FM; did not get up the dial to hear if Touch 106 was on...
 
Wonder if there are any local parts of WWZN remaining (brokered time shows? some game coverage--
oh, what about the North Shore Spirit?)
will they move to ESPN Boston?
 
Sorry to say, but it'll be whatever group pays without bouncing the checks.

Curiously, this from Radio and Records:

"The Blackstrap press release says (NYC's) WSNR’s current foreign-language and immigrant-oriented programming will be "retained and expanded." As for The Zone, through an aide Davidson tells R&R his company has no immediate plans to change its format.

That contradicts what was said in the press release, etc., but note the "immediate" word. Guess that means
it'll be awhile before it does change, or does it...? (NO plans to change, or just no IMMEDIATE...?)

How well does WWZN come in at night in Lynn, Lynnfield, Saugus, Revere, or Chelsea, considering that minor league games are as likely as major league games to be played at night?

FYI I think WSNR is licensed to Newark, not New York.
 
Yes, licensed to Newark NJ, across the creek. Wide directional signal straight into all of NYC. - 1960's.... "This is WVNJ, 620 kilocycles, the radio station of The Newark News".
 
driving on rt 128 between Reading and Peabody last night I checked 1510 and it sounded pretty strong.
but I know there are many holes in its night signal and I'm just mentioning one part of the entire
metro area...

Actually now I'm thinking the C.O.L. changed to Jersey City.
 
checking the FCC database does indeed shows WSNR's COL as Jersey City...
