It seems the school district has killed the program. I cannot confirm it, but if it is true, they've made a horrible mistake. This is not like football, you can't just decide not to field a team this year because you can't afford it.

Jaimie & Bob Ottone had a great legacy there. They recently won awards and were nominated again this past school year. What a shame.
There are ways to trim budgets, this is not one of them.
Exactly. I don't think the parties involved in making this decision realize what they are throwing away. This isn't like the decision to close down the pool. They could always re-open the pool in the future. It is possible to get the neccesary permits and funding to restore the pool down the line. The problem with the Radio station is the license. Once you walk away from something like that, THAT ALL FOLKS. They will NEVER get it back. I SERIOUSLY hope that they re-consider and bring WXBA back to life within the year. What a loss to the community. What an awesome and unique opportunity they have just denied their students. Currently there are only 4, count them FOUR High School radio stations here on Long Island with an FM broadcast license. Two of which have a share time agreement with each other. For all of the school districts here on Long Island, only FOUR have this incridible opportunity for students. Now it looks like that number has been narrowed to only Three. I just hope that this move by the Brentwood School District doesn't set a bad precedent for the remaining three HS Stations.
LI's Current Licensed HS Broadcast Radio Stations:
88.1 FM WXBA Brentwood - Brentwood Union Free School District
88.5 FM WPOB Plainview - Plainview Old Bethpage School District
88.5 FM WKWZ Syosset - Syosset Central School District
91.9 FM WSHR Lake Ronkonkoma - Sachem Central School District
LI's Current Licensed College Stations (Where Students get to be on the air)
88.7 FM WRHU Hempstead - Hofstra University
90.1 FM WUSB Stony Brook - Stony Brook University - SUNY
90.3 FM WHPC Garden City - SUNY Nassau Community College
AM 1570 WFTU Riverhead - Five Towns College
*88.1 FM WCWP Brookville - Long Island University(C.W. Post Campus)[only very few hours per week]*
note: CW Post has an impressive program with Webradio WCWP, but that is streaming on the net, and not on the air.
The other Non-Commercial stations on Long Island carry programing which originates far from Nassau and Suffolk County, with a good portion of it coming from Connecticut. Why the hell do we need Connecticut Public radio here on LI? Shouldn't it be the other way around? Isn't Nassau-Suffolk Market #18? Last I checked 18 means we're a bigger market than Hartford which is market #50, and New Haven which is Market #107, Bridgeport #120, and Stamford-Norwalk #142. Why don't we have LI Public radio? Or at the very Least New York Public Radio?
Then there are quality stations Like WFRS that relays Family Radio from California, The Translator in Massapequa that carries the signal of an Asian/Indian station from the stix in Georgia!
The only other Non-Comm station that actually originated from LI but is professionally operated (Not run by students and or community volunteers) is WLIU which programms Jazz and carries NPR programming. Most of that WLIU programming is simulcast on WCWP except for a few short hours in the evening on weeknights when WCWP has some of the more advanced students and staff on the air. Unfortunately the trend on WCWP for students seems to be decreasing rather than increasing.
So all in all, it lookms like the state of Non-Comercial Educational Radio here on Long Island is in sad shape, with just a handfull of exemplary facilities at some of our local High Schools and Colleges.
