WXCH 102.9 Hope IN Carrier On

Heard a carrier on 102.9 & drove a few miles to the CP location for the new 102.9 Hope,IN allocation. Sure enough, there's a 50' or so tower & a 2 bay horizontal only antenna behind the garage/barn. No ID's or other audio detected yet, but it is on the air.

500 watts at 33 feet seems kinda small, but it does reach the suburbs of Columbus.

I was doing some research on the county, it seems that the city is expecting growth in the coming years, so 102.9 Hope could potentially do more down the road.

What do you think it will serve? K-Love or something of that sort?

Doesn't K-Love already have a frequency in that area? I have friends in the Seymour area that listen.

Thats another good DX frequency gone. Depending on the conditions I can hear both Dayton Ohio's Urban station, or V-103 in Decatour Illinois, In martinsville during the summer, there is almost always a trace of V-103.

License app filed May 29. Says the station is operating with a local main studio. No studio waiver or other notation that would explain a dead carrier.

If the main studio is there in the barn where this is located would this require a Chief Operator Working? C.O.W.?

I especially like the rg 8 draping from the tower at a 45 degree angle to the barn. This isn't a long term operation eh?

I meant Y-103, not V-103... My bad.... ... I dont really care that much since its just a DX frequency, and not a listenable reliable signal like some translators hog up,,,, But I hope they plan on putting something local on there.

Playing mono oldies today...haven't listened at the top of hour to check for an ID.

The signal is terrible in Columbus. They aren't going to serve this market with those facilities.
Nothing about this makes sense.

is it an mp3 player in the barn? What are they calling it?

Houser Houser there's no Hope!

After last night's weather, I'm almost surprised they're still on with the facilities you describe :p

I live in New WHiteland and can't hear it. WHo owns it and who thinks HOpe is just a place holder til someone moves it elsewhwere?

I would just like a cogent answer to a VERY-simple question... WHY in this age would ANYONE build a so-called commercial station just outside the C’bus city limits with the facilities described ??? ??? :D

I've been asking that question, but no one will answer it. They had an application in for 6KW directional about 6 miles west of Greensburg...that app was mysteriously withdrawn & replaced with 500 watts horizontal at 14 meters. Somebody has pictures of somebody with some farm animals...only plausible explanation. There's a reason for this silliness..someday it may surface, for now, my money's on the farm animals...

That said, they played moldie oldies Monday, Tuesday the audio dies & Wednesday, the carrier disappeared. Maybe this stunt was just to file for a license...maybe a license is worth more than a CP? To quote a commercial on WIBC...this stinks like yesterday's french onion soup.

14 meters...OMG ::) Are these people serious or is this just a “placeholder” waiting for a buyer... Coaxial cable dangling at 50-feet and feed from the yard barn is NOT my idea of someone that is serious.

WXCH 103.1 FM Versailles 3kw @ 100m -> WXCH 102.9 FM Hope 500w @ 14m

The CP application was granted October 26th, 2007. The license to cover application was accepted May 29th, 2008. Evidently they were having problems getting the FCC to approve their "full power" application.

There was a previous application for a VERTICAL 500w @ 14m HAAT and the more memorable 6kw at 73m HAAT (91m AGL) accepted 1/22/07. (The technical details of the 6kw app can be read HERE at the FCC.)

The change from 103.1 to 102.9 was part of a bigger deal. WXCH needed to vacate their old channel to conclude that deal. Building a full power station isn't cheap. This "barn" installation is a license saver. Do it or lose the license.

the application doesn't request a main studio waiver, and where is the studio, or staff? Petitions To Deny due within 30 days.

Be sure that there isn't one if you make a filing. Main Studios are easy. Two people in an office within 20 miles of the site? The audio doesn't even have to come from the "Main Studio" ... it just has to be able to come from the main studio upon demand.

I suppose you could get friendly with the farm owner and get a tour, but it may turn out that the farmer is the "Station Manager" and his wife is the "Secretary". (Or vice versa for those that think that is sexist.) They are more likely to be violating some other rule ... such as EAS ... than the easy to comply with Main Studio rule.
