WXCT 990

FWIW, as a follow up to the flip of WXCT (formerly WNTY) some time ago comes word that due to it's struggle to attain affiliates, Greenstone Media is shutting down operations after this week.

WXCT, in it's incarnation as a female-oriented talk station, was an affiliate of Greenstone; carrying such programs as "The Radio Ritas."

The Radio Rita's was the only Greenstone Media show that we carried on WXCT. We dumped that show after we felt they were getting too politcial. We had a local morning show hosted by Thom Morgan (formerly of WNTY/990, WDRC/102.9, WIOF/104.1, WXCT/990) and Charlie Profit which aired 7AM-9AM from the last Monday in January 2007 until May 9th, 2007. (The day before the flip. I don't recall if he was on the day of the flip or not). [The thing about Thom Morgan's radio-ography was WNTY in the early 70s, WDRC/WIOF in the mid-late 70s, and WXCT from February-May 2004]

I dropped the Rita's less than a year after picking them up. Greenstone told me the show would be family friendly, and non-political (with an occasional political topic, like when former President Ford passed). There were too many instances of material that was not "family friendly", and Gloria Steinhem became a regular fixture on the show discussing politics...to the point of "telling listeners what they should do". Not cool. I wouldn't mind hearing about Steinhem's life, but I was not interested in carrying a political show. They also had alot of "issue oriented" content that was not what a morning show should be about. At least it was not what I wanted. Imagine waking up and hearing depressing news about the number of women with "this disease, or that disease". My wife is the target demo, and didn't like them very much. So...that was evidence enough that Greenstone didn't know what they were doing. The other shows they carried really were not appealing.

We dropped the Rita's in November of '06. We played Christmas music from 6pm-9am (yes, overnight through morning drive) until after New Year's. Thom Morgan rejoined the station at the end of January '07. We delivered a family friendly show. It took a few weeks to iron out a few kinks, and we were getting "there".

But what's done is done.

Any truth to the speculation that the 990 in Southington might change their call letters to WFYS?
