WXCT

I also heard someone from the station named Jennings Quigley (sp?) is or was a judge at a Pizza tasting event in Southington. (I don't know if they had the event already or if it's coming up).
I don't know but the guy is in charge of everything so...

Could WXCT go non-directional daytime now that there's no longer a 990kc in Providence? Their pattern has a null in the easterly direction that I assume was there to protect that Providence station. The southeasterly null is just a result of the symmetrical 2-tower array.. or is it there to protect the Groton 980kc?

"A return to local programming and staffing at the Southington site is possible through the acquisition of the Davidson stations also advances Red Wolf's goal of becoming the leader in accommodating the Hispanic population."

1. Aren't there enough Hispanic-programmed stations in the mkt. already?
2. If you are simulcasting, how can you do local programming?
3. If you are programming Oldies, how is that accommodating the Hispanic population?

Also, only Kool1180/WSKP has it's site on Radio-Locator.com - WACM has no site, & WXCT is still listed as "Radio Cantica Nueva". The logo on the audio streaming feed for WXCT is still "La Nueva Popular WACM 1490 AM "La Dinamica"

That quote puzzled me, too. (and not just because of the grammar -- is there an "and" missing between "stations" and "also"?) My first thought was that oldies is a placeholder format until Red Wolf decides which flavor of Hispanic format (tropical? Spanish AC? Talk? Dollar-a-holler religion?) will work best. Yes, the simulcast has added live talent, but the jocks being used are retirees and chances are they're not being paid much, so that in itself is no guarantee that a flip isn't in the cards.

Another thought: Maybe one stays oldies and the other goes back to Hispanic. Both markets have a bunch of lousy-signal AMs doing Spanish-language formats; 990 and 1490 would be nothing special in either, especially since both have been Spanish before. In addition, while Southington is a lily-white suburb of Hartford with practically no Hispanic population, there is a significant Hispanic presence in Meriden, just over the hills. Problem is, WXCT's signal is at its weakest there due to antenna pattern. So maybe it's WACM that flips back, although flipping WXCT would bring Tropical back to an area that doesn't benefit from Red Wolf's LP at 97.1 in Hartford unless they happen to be radio geeks with HD receivers or recent buyers of new cars with HD as part of the entertainment package.

I guess we just don't know what Red Wolf has in store for these two AMs, but it's hard to see either one becoming any more significant than they've ever been.

Radio-Locator should never be used as a source for radio information. It's always outdated. WXCT hasn't been Radio Cantico Nuevo in more than 3 years! From January 2012 until July 3, 2015 they were Spanish Tropical Monday-Friday only running Radio Cantico Nuevo during The Weekend.

Also Ray Weber an employee of the station says that audio stream is not valid any more and people who want to listen online need to use: http://tunein.com/radio/Kool-1180-990-s68957/

And the part about becoming the leader in accommodating the Hispanic population refers to WSPR(AM) and WKKB-FM.

The idea for Red Wolf is to make money on the format and to do that, they'll need a fired-up, energetic and Gung-ho sales staff that believes in the format.

Now they've added WSKP (1180) out of Hope valley, Rhode Island simulcasting the duo. They have collectively taken the moniker "Kool Radio". Here's their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/WXCTRadio/?fref=ts

Yes. Red Wolf Broadcasting (owners of WSKP along with WBMW 106.5/WWRX 107.7 in the New London Market and WMRQ 104.1 in the Hartford Market) purchased WXCT/WACM (along with their Spanish sister stations in Springfield and Providence) from Davidson Media Group for $2.9 million. They added WSKP and WBMW HD3 to the simulcast and rebranded the stations as KOOL Radio a couple weeks ago. KOOL Radio's programming will continue to originate at WACM's studios in West Springfield. Red Wolf plans on improving the 4 acquisitions from Davidson. I'm almost positive one of the guys doing the "KOOL Radio" legal ID at the top and bottom of the hour is the same guy Red Wolf uses on their Spanish Bomba-FM stations. I've noticed sometimes they have 2 different voices doing the Legal ID.

I have noticed an increase in advertising, with a lot of it from the southeastern CT area. So maybe the Gung-ho sales staff is now in place. I don't mind the increase in adverts as I realize it is good for the financial health of the WXCT group.

Noticed 990 was off the air for quite a while on Tues., 12/29 & Wed., 12/30. Xmtr maintenance to improve the stations' sound & signal range? 1490 was on the air.

According to people I know at the station there were transmitter issues. The big news that I hear is that an Engineering Study will be done to determine if they can double the daytime power of 990 to 5,000 watts. Eventually they might do one to determine if they can get more night power. In the past I heard they may be able to go up to 250 at night, but that would require building a 3rd tower.

Marc's Note: It's my opinion that a 3rd tower will not happen unless Mr. Fuller has a lot of money and a good lawyer. There is no way the people who live on Nunzio Drive in Plantsville (Southington) will let them build a third tower. Nunzio Drive is behind the station. My other opinion is that the people on Nunzio Drive should have no say in the matter. The first houses on that street WERE NOT built until the mid to late 80s, long after the radio station signed on in September 1969.

WXCT is a Class D station with only 80 watts at night. WACM is a class C station on 1490, an old Class IV graveyard frequency. Both stations could seek FM translators during the 6-month window that opens this month.

With an influx of new LPFMs signing on recently, is there room for a new translator? Except for the fact that he wouldn't want to reduce the coverage area of BOMBA-FM, Fuller could put WXCT on 104.1 HD4 and use one of the translators that relays BOMBA-FM.

Speaking of BOMBA-FM, does anyone know why it's on both 104.1 HD2 and HD4?
