WXEM 1460 AM Buford Dead Air Programming

The WLKQ site is in the same location it's been since I came here in 1994. In the Lake 102 days, the studio/office building was also there.

I was working for WKRP, Dallas GA in the late 70s. Our contract engineer was also the contract engineer for the Buford stations. He took me on a tour. I remember the AM was folded cables on the three sides of the tower. That particular contract engineer was the director of TV engineering for Rollins (owner of Orkin) at the same time and of course Rollins has since left the TV business.

Did you get to know Venus Flytrap while you were there?

thread: WXEM off the air ,on the air

WXEM dose not have a skirted tower, its use a 1/4 wave stub to isolate the fm antenna from the tower.

your point? youve already said that in this thread

WKRP ...

I thought Bailey was a hot looking and smart girl ......

As I know today WXEM has no business being on the air days, should have been on days at 5 Kw for over a year. Has never been OK with being on the air nights at full power ...........and WKRP was written about WQXI in Atlanta Ga I would know I visited many time back then.

HUH?

There is just so much a radio station owner can do to piss off the FCC.and WXEM has done all of them.as of this day July 22 2020 there is no entry that they have renewed there broadcasting licence. It was due on April 1 st 2020.So see they interfere with other am station at night being over 190 watts.and on and on

Come on Lou whats to be gained by all you talking down on me.You are a ham some of my best time going to hamfest.so we could just get along ?

Trying to figure who you are.

Did you work at the Dirty Thirty? Or 36?
My favorite Bill Rudd story:
I had finished my shift and was headed home when I was intercepted by Bill Rudd. I was drafted into helping him change a heat exchanger coil on a TTU-60.
I had other things I wanted to do but it was an honor to work with Bill Rudd. So, I went down there.
It was a 2 man job for sure. But most of all I remember laying on that C-O-L-D concrete floor removing the bolts from the underside of that coil.
Nevertheless, the project was a success.

I've been with radio station all of my work history.Ch thirty was WETV later was WPBA and Ch 36 has always been WATL on an ocasion the tower crew was pull three bays of 12 up WTBS tower when the rope brook three bays fell 800' had it been a week day cars parked there would have been crushed employ cars would have been crushed but it was Saturday

I forgot to tell you Lou that Bill used to clime up WSB tv tower to change out all the tower lights as extra work. When he told us what he did when he reached the top beacon, open up the top half of the lamp holder and threw one leg over the lower half and screwed out then replaced the upper and lower 600 watts lamps at over a 1000'

[A word on WXEM the company owners have a lawyer. They are in talks with the FCC on back payments,So I'd guess they are ok to be broadcasting.Still over power at evenings and no modulation have not been addressed for fines. There most luck so farr...............................

More bad luck with WXEM 1460 AM in Buford, GA. It seems they have been knocked off the air as a result of a possible lightning strike from storms that moved through the area yesterday (8/26/2020). Completely off the as of today (8/27). Other stations in the simulcast trio, WLBA 1130 Gainesville and WAOS 1600 Austell, were on the air as normal.

It could have been the same circumstances that knocked WMLB 1690 in Avondale Estates (Cheshire Bridge co-located tower) off the air briefly the other day. WMLB is back on the air today. During the time that WMLB was off the air I was able to catch a TIS station on adjacent 1680 kHz from Gatlinburg, TN mixed in with more dominant WOKB in Orlando, FL in the late afternoon. The Gatlinburg TIS station (normally only 10 watts) may be on higher power as the FCC is allowing stations that are running COVID-19 announcements and information to do so which this station seems to be doing.
