WXIA/Atlanta 11pm weekend newscast, 4/12/80

Ellen Burstein is anchoring the 4/12/1980 broadcast of 11 Alive News. Watching this makes we see just how far technology has come. There was a tornado that day. Look at the maps at the beginning of the newscast.

One odd thing in the newscast, the Atlanta Penitentiary had a horse show.

As I type this I continue to watch this newscast. There is such a difference between today's WSB-TV tracking of a storm and this 1980 display board that uses numbers, symbols, and MAGNETS to show the storm track. :)

There are two great commercials at the end of the newscast. One is for Z-93 and the other for diesel Cadillac Seville.

I agree. That opening and theme was something unique. Today, the openings of all of the stations are so graphics oriented, that they all look and sound the same.

Looks like this aired Sunday, April 13, 1980. Clues include: Face The Nation clip and mention that the Dogwood Festival has ended. The Festival has never ended on a Saturday to my knowledge.

In 1980 I saw Star Trek for the first time in color. I started Southern Tech in Marietta and one of my fraternity brothers had a color tv. My family only had b/w while I grew up. Being an engineering school of nerds, we all gathered around that color TV at 4PM to watch Star Trek re-runs. I even remember the day they edited out the ending. Someone was attacking the ship, a splice went through the projector and suddenly Spock and McCoy are standing around Kirk's chair smiling. I called WXIA and the operator said the switchboard was swamped. :)

Wait, Krystal had chicken and biscuits??? ;D
