WXIA Owner to Be Sold

Two companies are said to be getting together to acquire Tegna, owner of WXIA-TV. One of the companies is Apollo, which owns Cox Media Group, which in turn owns WSB-TV.

FCC rules say 1 company cannot own 2 stations in the same market if one of the stations is in the top 4 in the ratings. I wonder, however, what the rule is when a company owns 1 station and part of another.

If a station has to be sold, it's obviously going to be WXIA.

Cox will acquire TEGNA’s KVUE-TV Austin, WFAA and KMPX Dallas, and KHOU and KTBU Houston as well as Standard Media’s KBSI Cape Girardeau MO, KLKN Lincoln NE, WDKA Paducah KY, and WLNE-TV New Bedford MA/Providence RI, while divesting WFXT Boston. In particular of note is that Cox already owns a radio cluster in Houston including County “93Q” 92.9 KKBQ, “Country Legends 97.1” KTHT, and Classic Rock “107.5/106.9 The Eagle” KGLK/KHPT.

Here is the deal so far

Apollo will hold non-voting stake in TEGNA, but its operations are NOT being merged with Cox Media Group. Cox will acquire a number of stations from TEGNA and Standard as part of the deal, while divesting WFXT Boston to the new TEGNA.

This might be messy. There are apparent conflicts in several markets. FCC and DOJ might force quite a few changes in the deal.

With WATL going with them, unless it's made WSB's duopoly station. And that won't happen as WXIA and WATL are in the same studio building..
