WXIS In Erwin Is Stunting

According to the other site, this station is flipping its format. Just checked out their stream and all I heard was a heartbeat. I'm not from that area but wanted to share this news, with the regulars here.

Dan <><

P.S. They didn't say what the new format will be. Only time will tell on that.

B.T.W. Their sister station WEMB has flipped to NBC Sports. Details about the new format are here: http://nbcsportstricities.com

I'm surprised by how long 92.3/103.9 Jamz have lasted in the Tri-Cities, which is over 16 years. Let's hope the Rhythmic format find a new home in the market.

Now for the latest!

WXIS is now doing news under the LiveWire News banner.

That's what their Facebook page is reporting.

P.S. Just checked out their online stream and that's what I'm hearing.

I don't know about that. A station doesn't change format because it's working. All News might not be a huge draw but the ad dollars, at least locally directed buys, might very well be more substantial. I agree, a pretty small market for such a format. It would seem the station will likely be mostly computer driven as they'll use a good deal of network. Are they streaming?

In most markets news is either a big winner or attracts a small audience. Even those small audience stations say they did well on billing.

Thank you for the link Dan.

Looking at the market, there are a huge number of stations for the population including a good many AM stations that likely do better than other markets due to terrain. I would be hard pressed to find the format where I can be assured of the revenue I need. It appears you'd do pretty good at picking up an audience with a rhythmic format versus news but looking at the market and what the other stations are doing, it could very well be local based ad dollars are going elsewhere. The reality of radio is that you have to have the dollars to stay on the air and from what I'm seeing of the market is there's not a huge number of stations after the younger demos. Advertising decisions might be the reason why. I'm only speculating on this. Looking at the Nielsen Ratings, it looks like most stations do not participate so that tells me many stations survive by selling businesses directly.

At least with news you can run more units per hour and sell lots of 'perks' and sponsorships other formats simply do not offer. If you have the sales staff (a big if) and are hitting the streets every day, you can certainly grab lots more attention with a format the client thinks is a good choice for their business. It will be interesting to see if the format wheel will spin in another year or so.
