WXIX Weather and Paul Ossman

Have you ever noticed when Paul does the weather he does not used a very detailed weather map. All of the others do. Does Paul have his AMA license? I don't think he does and maybe that's the reason his weather casts are simple. I don't think he's the best they can do in prime time.

Re: WXIA Weather and Paul Ossmann

Despite what what the 11 Alive website says Paul is not a Meteorologist. On the air he is the channel 11 weather person that does not have the word meteorologist under his name. He does have a NWA seal but does not have an AMS seal.

Paul has many years experience doing the weather so that counts for something. Don't forget that he is no Glenn Burns or Ken Cook but at least he know a lot more that Dagmar knows about weather. TV market number 8 and have our chief weather people are not meteorologists.

Re: WXIA Weather and Paul Ossman

Why does 11 Alive suck so hard? I mean, 46 is on the verge of getting their act together while 11 is threatening to fall into the basement.

Re: WXIX Weather and Paul Ossmann

Paul is a nice guy, but he is challenged as a forecaster and as a creator of graphic content. He has always had Chris Holcomb, Steve Adamson, or Josh Johnson available to create content and provide forcasting support, but he has not had any help in months, so I think some of his weaknesses are showing up a little more now than in the past.

I think Josh is gone now. Yesterday evening's graphics were horrendous. He only showed the 5 day forecast and never showed a national map showing the potential fronts or temp changes. Can't they get a computer geek weather intern to help him?

Josh has been gone for months... Took a CM gig at a smaller market, nearby, but I don't think it was Mississippi. They could be having some problems with their graphics rendering system, and it not be Paul. Paul's a great guy and, as mentioned earlier, though not a meteorologist, he still knows his stuff.

I think the best for weather at ch. 11 personally is Orlan Sidney of former CNN fame. She is wonderful and would love to see her more often. Now she knows her weather.

I also heard ch. 11 and the Gannett stations are cutting back and will move all switching for it's stations to one central location. Atlanta news could be done from another city with just local field reporters. I heard Jacksonville Fla. Now this is what I heard but does make sense if you wanna save money.

Paul is very good on camera. He is not a very skilled forecaster and he will admit that privately. Graphics; he is not good at making those either. He does miss the support that Chris, Steve, or Josh have given him over the years. With Josh gone and Chris and Steve working other assignments, it leaves Paul alone and that downgrades the content he has available to present.

I have worked with Paul on a project in the past for an awards show at the Atlanta Civic Center. He has great off the cuff talent and a great personality. He is very friendly and has a great sense of humor. I will agree that I have noticed the lack of graphics and it is showing where some of his weaknesses are. Maybe he will take a class or two to learn how to do those graphics or spend some time with the other on camera meteorologists to train. He really does add a lot to humor, let's face it, we've had some lousy weather from droughts to drowns. I wish more people could meet him and see what a great guy he is. He is very down to earth and not full of himself.

But I know what some of you are going to say, all of that doesn't make up for the lack of graphics others can display. I just want a plain and straight forward forecast so graphics are not a deal breaker for me. Paul told me once that the most accurate forecasts are ones where it is not more than 48 hours out. I would agree with that with the 7 day forecasts. Those 7 days often predict a lot of rain and it doesn't happen or dry and it pours most of the week.

I hope that something can be done to prevent more loss of viewers. They might not have the highest ratings but I really like their on air talent. I miss Walt Maciborski, although Keith Whitney is good.

I'm a fan of Paul Ossmann's personality, too. When he and Amanda Davis hosted Good Day Atlanta, I watched that program religiously. It seemed to fit his personality well. Naming him "Chief Meteorologist" makes little sense to me, especially since he's not an actual meteorologist (see: Dagmar Midcap).

That some of the funniest damn stuff I've ever read! Quote of the day goes to Ellen Crooke:

When asked if he is still WXIA’s next weatherman, station manager Ellen Crooke said only, “Not if he shows up looking like a bag of doorknobs and sounding like Dick Clark.”

It sounds to me as though he's doing all he can to stay put in Buffalo. It sounds like he'll have a face for radio, though...

When does the new guy start from Buffalo? Just saw this about Chesley McNeil on the net. He may not be starting anyway at WXIA.

That site is a satire (Buffalo's version of The Onion).

His last day was last Friday. He is headed to WXIA. He looks good from the pictures WGRZ posted.

Nobody can be stupid to moonlight like that.

Another thing ch. 11 news is doing that is getting out of hand is the traveling of the anchor's from the set to the so called news rooms to chat with reporter's. It's just getting silly and does not impress the viewer. Anchor's...stay on the set and report the news. One thing I can say about ch. 2 is they are way more professional in their reporting something ch. 11 could learn from and I don't especially like ch. 2 but will go to them for news.

Yeah Paul may be a nice guy but I want the weather no silly chit chat that he is good at.

WXIA cannot remotely compete with WSB-TV...so they have quit trying. They are instead offering a product with a focus on softer news items, and trying to make a more friendlier product with a smaller-market feel akin to some of their sister stations (yes...news in Nielson DMA #8 can have the features of a smaller market newscast). That chit-chat is just a part of it.

Of course...that one of the reasons WSB-TV is successful (in addition to a steady news team)...the "professional" if-it-bleeds-it-leads approach viewers love. WXIA (and for a while WGCL) are trying to cater to an audience that does not care much for crime stories or other hard news features (why there is no investigative unit). I applaud WXIA for putting out what they are putting out.
