WXJZ Goes Smooth AC

WXJZ/Gainesville Goes Smooth AC

October 15,2010: After a dozen years as a traditional Smooth Jazz outlet, Asterisk Communications' WXJZ/Gainesville moves to Broadcast Architecture's vocal-focused Smooth AC format.

"It was our desire to freshen up our successful 12-year run of Smooth Jazz with new artists and more vocals in order to attract a younger, more mass-appeal audience," WXJZ GM John Starr said. "Broadcast Architecture's Smooth AC is the logical choice."

BA President Allen Kepler said, "We are very excited to assist John, Bill Elliott, and their team on bringing the Smooth AC Network to Gainesville. With typical AC stations moving away from the softer approach, we know that there are many adults looking for a companion to help them relax and enjoy their day. The music mix offers a variety of styles, genres, and eras of music not found on other stations, and we see this to be a solid opportunity to deliver strong 25-54 PPM ratings."

The Smooth AC format is about 75 percent vocals, with core artists including Sade, Michael Buble, Michael Jackson, and Seal. The rest of the music comes from such Smooth Jazz staples as Boney James, Dave Koz, and Chris Botti.

This makes good business sense and seems to be the trend in most markets that had a smooth jazz outlet. The smooth jazz format has aged in recent years, and by adding smooth A/C vocals to the mix, the target demo tends to favor a younger 25 - 54 adult. I wish WXJZ much continued success!

Smooth A/C is not going to hit 25-44 year olds. They basically play the vocals that the BA smooth jazz format plays, which means a lot of the songs are over 25 years old. It's "Lite-er" than soft mainstream A/C and Gainesville is a young market.

Although what you say is true, the smooth A/C mix will lower the overall demo making the format more sellable. Smooth Jazz is a dying format across the board. I personally very much enjoy smooth jazz but my personal taste does not always reflect market demands which is why I veiw market trends and radio in general from an objective (rather than subjective) perspective. I believe WXJZ will see improvements in its ratings and overall bottom line sales in the coming months as a result of this most recent move. John Starr and Bill Elliott are on target with "Smooth", and I wish WXJZ much continued success!

my feeling is that an oldies station of any type isn't going to do well in a young market. They play a few "currents" but those are 2-10 year old songs that A/C and Urban A/C fried in a past life. Oldies is just not a hot format...they shoulda done some kind of rock.

Maybe they will consider that now that Rock 104 abandoned the rock format in favor of country.

A college town and tons of 18-34 males and no kick ass rocker to serve the market? The Buzz, seriously?

doubtful...

You never really know what may happen. However, WXJZ just made a format adjustment so I'm sure John Starr will want to give it a few rating periods to see how it plays out before any other possible adjustments, if any at all, will be considered.

If there were someone with a brain at Pamal, they would've moved the Buzz to 106.9 the week the flip at RUF-FM happened.

But apparently, the Benjamin Hill that is in charge there is not the same programming versed GM from the legendary WPGC/DC, and the same one responsible for sign ons of great radio stations that are around to this day, like KBXX in Houston.

For all intents and purposse moving The Buzz to 106.9 won't help WHHZ very much. Although WKZY is 100kw on 106.9 verses a 50kw equalivant on 100.5, WKZY's signal is only marginally stronger over Gainesville.

Thank you Mark, clearly radiosanchez isn't aware of the two signals.

KZY may penetrate buildings a bit better-- but not a whole heck of a lot.

Where is the resident engineer, KMargrill?
