WXLI 1230 AM in Dublin

I noticed that 1230 AM WXLI is now on FM on 93.1. And the sister station 50,000 WKKZ is on 92.7. I thought they would be too close toghther? Does anyone know anything about this? For about a month radio-locator showed a CP for WXLI to be on 92.1 in Wrightsville. I knew that would not work because it's too close to Louisville with a 92.1.

You might try posting over in the engineering section. You question can only be dealt with by someone who works with applications and spectrum searches.

Translators are allowed to accept interference whereas full power stations can't. The rules are far less restrictive on translators as far as spectrum use is concerned. While full power FM stations are allocated based on mileage separation, translators can use contour separation just like the reserved band FMs below 92.1 MHz.

Plus if there is a tiny area of overlap to the full power FM as in this case, if the tiny area is not populated, then the FCC will grant a waiver to the translator subject to any interference complaints filed against the translator from the full power FM receiving interference.

If this is true, "Georgia" discussion board is unlike all the others. Most of these discussion boards cover ANYTHING radio as long as it involves a local station in the area.

I'm sorry. I wrote something to easily misunderstood. I wasn't trying to say that you can't or shouldn't pose such a question here in the Georgia board. Be my guest. To post such a question is not immoral or fattening or sinful.

My point was that the specific question asked by the OP was quite technical. The "quite technical" thinkers spend a lot of time reading and posting in the Engineering forum. I was simply trying to suggest that by posting in THIS form, a large number of the readers and participants would look at the question and mutter to them selves: "What the hell is that all about. Why doesn't he speak English?"

But the original poster has had extremely good fortune. Of all the people I can think of who participate in these forums, the one who probably has more knowledge and first-person-experience on the topic showed up with the answer... and explained the answer in a way that some of my gear-headed-friends might have expressed in technical terms that would have left us all standing here muttering to our selves: "Wha'd he say????"

Thank you, Art. I learned something from your answer. We all understand that you cannot go around building things and operating things that will interfere with other people's signal. They don't have to accept it! But I had not thought my way through the concept: Some people can go around building SOME THINGS if they are willing to accept some interference..... but there are OTHER THINGS that are not allowed to receive and accept some interference... even if they wanted to in order to get "the grant".

Thank you.

They've got really weak modulation on 93.1 with some serious left and right channel issues. Meanwhile, up the dial, the 96.9 translator is mono but clean. Our reigning champ for the hardest clipped/grittiest/most tiring audio still goes to 95.9 and their square wave processing.

Yes they seem to have issues the WXLI FM translator. Maybe the transmitter is just a lemon? As far as 96.9 they sound good and yes they have been in mono for about a week and a half. It seems some of their stations was off the ait and then 96.9 went mono for some reason.

IIRC analog FM transmitters have a 1-50 watt "exciter" stage, that "makes" the FM signal that is amplified to what ever the final power is going to be. I have worked at stations that used composite STLs and analog STLs. This should not be a hard fix.
