WXLW now?

Yes, I know... I would even consider that if I could moonlight doing something else, now that I am free (with the blessing of the 'ex') to do my life's call... I am seeing several middle aged guys and gals willing to start and settle with a good outfit and try and make them better and more marketable in sales... I really see a day when even top fifty markets will have smaller niche stations with air talent going back to mutli-tasked duties of air, sales, production and remotes/promotions.. When you give a well rounded radio person a 40 to 55 hours week with a base and sales percentage, you can make a decent living and enjoy the work... We are too into "We're so big that sales is sales and air is air..." When the sales team has six months to get two years of new clients on a commission only, and the 25 year old air talent has two kids and a wife and can't afford to stay in the biz! I felt honored to be asked for a resume and a cd of my work... Emmis is a GREAT opertion from the ones I have known to work there...

usually it's the SALESman that used to get the on air shifts as part of a "perk" - but of course, that usually results in bad air talent - and of course if you're on air, you're not selling!!! Bad combination.

Is Oakland City REALLY a University? I know they changed the name but ....

Math problem :

Jonathon makes $10,000 a month at his business.

Jonathon didn't ralize he needed a tower site and pays $5,000 a month to lease space for his 3 towers which are fully amortised, being built in 1959.

Jonathon has a GM who makes $5000 a month. He has air talent (?) times 3 who make $3000 a month. Plus FICA and taxes.

Jonathon has an LMA $5 grand each month on an FM with no signal and little billing.

Jonathon just bought a new transmitter. Jonathon has other expenses.

Insiders say the Byrds are bleeding to the tune of 30 grand a month.

What else is Jonathon spending money on to loose $30,000 a month?

Rakestraw may not have that long to be on the air.

How much can Jonathon loose and still operate the buffet in Greenwood?

It's interesting because not too long ago, Jonathan had a full staff of experienced radio professionals. Those people were run off for a couple of reasons. 1. Someone wanted a pay raise and you can't very well do that when you have too many people on the payroll. 2. Those radio professionals knew more about radio than the people in charge...might make some people insecure. At least then, there was more money coming in because sales people were sales people and on-air talent was on-air talent. Now, everyone is pulling double duty. No wonder they aren't making any money.

Ah yet another Monday afternoon ruined by the break in of Rakestraw and the award winning Ron Hunter Show. You know, my bosses should actually thank them. I get a lot more done when such terrible shows come on. It seems to be the only time I turn off the radio and become a productive member of the workforce. Rakestraw is without a doubt the sorriest sap I've ever heard on sports radio. Simply pathetic. Byrd deserves every penny that he loses. It is simply unexcusable to force us to listen to such terrible radio when there are so many better options right in front of his face.

Hummm? If a 'well rounded' radio person is in that position, it SELLS..... I sold more on the 'on-air' connection than I did off the number #1 12+ spot in the ARB.... The small to medium sized client identifed with the guy or gal they heard on the radio and felt the connection to buy.... I made a great living in that atmopshere, and so did the sale mgr. in AM drive and the afternoon drive guy.. We knew who to hit and offer and the one-two punch made it fabulous....

Well Skipper, sounds like they should just hand the keys to the building over to you, as well as Mr. Byrd's highly expensive foreign car (model unknown). Get real. Selling to a few car dealers and the bait and tackle shop is not the solution. You might as well just throw me in there and I've never done radio outside of being the eighth caller a few times. Just more stupid clutter is what you are suggesting by your supposedly selling prowless. That station doesn't need a new person, they need a complete overhaul.

It's simply a terrible joke. As a sports fan I am embrassed. And if Rakestraw wants to walk around thinking he's some sort of top dawg cause he's doing the Ron Hunter Show from an IUPUI snack shop at noon on a Monday, then so be it. Byrd will continue to lose and lose and lose...

Now I do agree on the station's content.. You don't have to oversell and underpriced rate card... I am in total yeah, on that one.. You have to balance the act with class.. As a program minded salesman, I did that and for sure when I was a sales oriented programmer... AND, make darn sure the production and local spots are quality, not just script and noise.. I do understand what you mean on the 'quality' of it.. We are in the same boat for that one... Find a niche and do it to the best of your ability...

One important clarification needs to be made here. The true TOP DAWGS are the Salukis from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. They will be this year's NCAA basketball champions.

Actually, if you have no signal after 5:30pm - and want to get any sponsorship, it's much easier to convince a potential sponsor that more people would be listening at work, lunch, car at noon to a coaches' show, than would be at 7pm with no signal while average "family-oriented" sports fans move from the radio at work to the TV at night.

This is one of the SMART moves by the station. While you may prefer a national show like the Heard during that hour, my guess is there's not a lot of spots sold during that hour most other days of the week. And since there are no ratings anyway - go for the sellable programming.
