WXLW questions

I have a couple of questions about WXLW, 950 AM in Indianapolis. First of all, did the station go back to being a daytimer? And what is the station's format now?

Not sure what the exact definition of a daytimer is, but they run 5KW days & around 100 watts at night, a power level that is not protected from interference and in theory, could be reduced if occupancy on 950 changes. Just tuned them in & they are still sports, a format they've had for some years now.

If memory serves, XL950 runs a couple of "hot talk" shows, including Mancow in the Morning.

It's a Class D station. It's authorized for an unprotected nighttime operation of less than 250 watts equivalent (117 watts) but is not required to use that authorization. (Class A, B, and C stations are required to operate at least 4 hours a night, six days a week, between 6pm and midnight.)

most of all of the 117 watts of night time power WXLW has is beamed southward towards southern Indiana so if your on the north side of indy and north ward forget hearing a peep of WXLW at night unless its via streaming audio.

XL booms into Plainfield at night. The signal is just as good at night as it is during the day. Very impressive for 100-some watts.

BTW, Phil Hendrie is a great alternative to Coast to Coast!

It's too bad that land where the transmitter sits isn't worth what it was back in the day when Shirk buried himself alive out there. Hindsite being 20/20 it should have been turned off and the land developed into a CVS or Walgreens. I doubt they could get an all you can eat chinese buffet to locate there now.

My used to be favorite Chinese place was at 56th and Georgetown next to marsh until the day...

the Cat Doctor opened immediately next door in the strip mall. 1 tower between the 250 w protected and what they have now.

If anyone wants to know it can move...

My dad was vice principal at Broad Ripple High School, and we used to pass that place all the time. It was the first station that I ever remember seeing. I also had an uncle that used to live right across the street. Hit many golf balls at the old Ensley's range, too. I'm sure Chief Engineer remembers those places.

Shirk sold the station but not the land , big mistake.

Can't tell you how many times pastor hood never paid to have the grass mowed. Many times I droove by and saw the doghouse door open. (Waving in the wind). Since this is a lovely domestic area the fences all had holes in them with easy access across the arc gap.

Right before the Raven group purchased the option on the land was up and Hood sold the station and used the money from the overpriced sale to Raven to buy their transmitter land.

Raven should call me about moving it to another site. 15 grand a month. That's a lot of chicken at jonathan byrd.....

i heard that the raven is under a lma with hood for like 6 mil for that blow torch 95.9fm out of franklin

talk about the price of chicken going up
