This is another reason I question how much longer the station will be around.

They will keep the station on the air just to keep someone else from getting the channel. The daytime signal covers the market and a 250 watt FM translator on one of the TV towers could cover this foot print. I have not looked into any translators in this market but they are popping up everywhere!

I'm admittedly not very informed on things like this, but is it really worth bleeding money just to keep the channel?

Well, no matter. WIBC moved to FM to bring the product to a broader demo. The Fan hired local talent. A lot of Emmis folks have ridden out the hard times.

Ridden out the hard times? Working in a palace and getting a regular pay check doesn't sound like hard times. It's the Emmis shareholders who are dealing with hard times as the stock sits at 64 cents. Taking on too much debt has consequences.

Last night WXNT was running a public affairs interview with a person from the local United Way. Automation cut him off in mid-sentence, covering his thought up with an NAB promo talking about how dependable local radio is and how much local radio stations care. That was followed by a dated PSA talking about hurricane Katrina hitting last year, then 3 more minutes of PSAs, 5 minutes of Fox news theme music, 10 minutes of dead air, a Fox news cue tone test, 4 minutes of station promos and then the NAB promo again talking about how relevant local radio is. WXNT seemed to have had these types of problems fixed until the last year or so when they started to crop up again, worse than ever.

I'm sure the BIG SHOT over at Entercom is on top of it!

I can no longer defend my friends who are in management there. This station is absolutely awful. Saturday they were running promos for Abduls show. They should just donate the AM to a group for a tax deduction. radio is dying because owners won't invest in the one thing that will save it...local content.

After thinking a bit more about this and seeing hoosier's comment (emphasis on hot shot in the singular), it brings up another issue of staffing. I've already brought up the idea of sacrificing quality to save a little money, but shouldn't there also be checks and balances? It seems like that is a huge element missing in the Entercom cluster. In most organizations while ultimately management (in the case of radio usually a market manager) has the final say, isn't it important for others to be able to have the freedom to step up and make suggestions on organizing elements that will ultimately effect a product? I know that not all suggestions would be followed, but posing those questions can put the thought in the heads of the higher ups and at least make them review possibilities. Even if these checks and balances are done within the management system it's still important. However, it sounds like most of the management staff in this cluster are Yes-men/women since a) many have worked with the market manager for years and have very similar views, b) have seen what she does to managers/employees that disagree with her and c) simply don't care what happens as long as they are being paid. Shouldn't management be required to be a bit more diversified to create these checks and balances and ultimately make the whole thing work successfully?

They WERE [and in lessening cases—are still] "popping-up" from grants on applications made BEFORE the FCC slammed the door on additional "translator abuse" and declared a freeze with no foreseeable lift date in sight. The Commission was flooded with FX-class apps with the foul odor of a "sham" and figuratively said: "Enough is enough!" You can cheerfully give thanks to the second-rate "religious" shill of your choice—and there are oh-so-very-many to choose from, and NO – I'm not pointing an easy-to-wag finger at "Target E.M.F."—who has every appearance of presenting a QUALITY PRODUCT—albeit opportunistic in nature.

Add to this injury, the new and mounting Corporate Radio fascination with bidding up the price of a translator commodity [that should be banned from resale in the first place] merely to off-load their pathetically-failed HD Radio sub-services onto a low-power analog medium – and you have one big "mell-of-a-hess"! Therein lays the problem: HOW does a government agency codify a "quality product" and an authentic public service intention, and justify that subjective interpretation without attracting the charge of regulatory censorship? EASY... They simply STOP accepting new apps and slow to a dribble the award of new authorizations. That seems to be the status quo at this time, and is most unfortunate for many who REALLY NEED the signal augmentation provided by an additional translator.

WXNT—is NO such candidate for that form of "breast enhancement". Its problems are mostly of its own making [hint: "chronic neglect"]. Unlike many AM stations with drastically-substandard fulltime coverage, 1430 enjoys what many consider to be the best night signal over Indianapolis proper. It lacks the nasty nulls that plague the after-dark performance of its two larger daytime-coverage siblings—WFNI and WNDE... 'And yes, it's even reliably-received within that sacred cow aka—Hamilton County. It's just a poor candidate for an FM translator juxtaposition—even assuming one is available.
