WXRK HD2 (K-Rock) to be replaced with KROQ Simulcast?

Any truth to this rumor?

I wouldn't doubt it as CBS is now starting to toy with the idea of simulcasting other market stations. KROQ is already on San Diego KSCF-FM HD2.

I hope not! I am waiting for the HD radio increase like an excited puppy dog to hear k-rock again from old greenwich CT....
yes it comes in but... for a second then drops... ten seconds... dops again.... and again... you get the idea what airplanes do to about the 60 watt HD signal

finally CBS doing something that makes sense...sort of.

In five years time, the entire east and west coasts will be like the city of philadelphia: a wireless hotspot. Local radio-stations are pretty redundant in those environments. The fact that CBS is thinking nationally with its brands is very wise.

The problem is that I like alternative music, and not that kind of angry teenager alternative music that is the kroq brand. I have no issues with cbs simulcasting the west coast stream on it hd signal, but I do have an issue with their diluting a great alternative stream. Online, they ought to offer both, so they can penatrate the market with the cbs radio media player when the seaboards become like more like Philly.

The HD2 channel is a shell of what "K-Rock" was a year ago - and even a year ago, it was a shell of its former self...

What's wrong with simulcasting WYSP out of Philly on the 92.3 HD2 channel - oh, that's right... WYSP will be blown up pretty soon, I'm sure...

How come WXRK/WBCN never just copied with what they were doing with KROQ/KITS? You know, alternative, not active rock?

That's a very good question. I think alternative can work in NYC if delivered correctly. K-Rock and CBS had that opportunity but blew it away. I don't like how radio corporations are simulcasting other market stations, especially in market #1.

What makes FM radio special is the locality, once you take that away it doesn't have a leg to stand on

Usually, companies like CBS do extensive research to figure out what would work out for each market. Whether there are any format holes, what demo would best work out for their cluster, what type of music their target demo in that area wants, etc. CBS probably considered it but then realized it wasn't what would "work out" for K-Rock and WBCN, so they went to a new Active Rock direction.

And we all saw just how well Active Rock "worked out" for K-Rock. That's some high quality research they must have used. ::)

Stereobrain:What makes radio special is the locality. Once you take that away, they don't have a leg to stand on. Maybe in NYC things are local, but the localness ship of fm has sailed along time ago in most markets. Rather than looking for local ad revenues, most would rather weep in their losses of national ad revs.
There is now second tier markets not even subscribing to Arbitron (and I'm talking the number one and two stations) because of the lack of national ad revs. Hmmm, might be on to something, the smaller markets, who are still doing quite well in most areas, have never relied on Arbitron. They simply sold the old fashioned way. If the client likes the station, they buy it.

Right before K-ROCK flipped to NOW, they sounded a lot more like I-95 out of Danbury or WPDH in Pughkeepsie (mainstream rock stations) given how much Tom Petty and Doors and little 90's music they were playing. The only time K-ROCK was a true active rock station (like WCCC in Hartford or WAAF in Boston) was in 2005 during the Great Rock Period era since they did play some heavier and 90's stuff.

It was more of a Mainstream Rock station rather than Active Rock considering how little currents they played. The main focus was classic rock (Bon Jovi/Pink Floyd) with about one current every hour. This was even during the Great Rock Period era. I don't think it was truly Active since it started leaning Alternative in 2002, but I guess I'm splitting hairs here.
