What are the chances of WXRY ever becoming a real Columbia player? A station like this would be a perfect full market player. They play a solid mix of true alternative, AAA, and old school new wave/alt. I just wish that another frequency would become available for us living out of downtown to pick them up. I am glad I work in West Cola. so that I can hear something so close seem so far away. LoL

There is not a big enough market for alternative rock to begin with. 2 stations just splinter an already small demo and help no one. I like XRY but was expecting much more.

I'll step in for just a second.

The non-urban demo really isn't that small. The City proper is just about 50/50 white/black (this changes in Richland County) and 73% of the population of the City is 44 years old or younger. The number of stations serving the non-urban 44 and below demo are small. In fact, the coin is almost exactly reverse from 15-20 years ago when there was only three stations serving the urban audiences, three CHR's, two A/C's, and a Classic Rock station. Charleston, which is not much different than Columbia in demographics, and differs mainly in geography, architecture, and attitude, supports at least two rock-based formats and now 2 CHR's. So, I am not sure there is much splintering going on, particularly when WARQ is an 18-34 station trying to stretch 25-40 (damn breweries) and WXRY is primarily a 25-45/54 station.

What is the "much more" you were expecting? In what way does the station not satisfy your expectations? What would you change? What would you keep the same?

The original question was about obtaining a better signal. If a signal came available, could WXRY get the money to buy a better stick? Have all the options been explored? I think the station sounds good when I can pick it up.

Without speaking out of school, WXRY is exploring a number of different avenues. We're not interesting in running a commercial operation, so paying a premium for a commercial signal is not an attractive option, unless one of the other operators in the market wanted an exceptional tax write-off to turn a disadvantaged signal into a positive.

Several of the non-comms were not interesting in talking with us. The response of one was downright nasty.
