WXTM: Officially no longer "Xtreme..."

I'm so desperate to switch topics. Fortunately, I can with the following:

WXTM/92.3- Cleveland Heights has finally changed their postioner. It's no longer "Cleveland's Xtreme Radio" but "923X: Cleveland's Rock Alternative" with new imaging by Igor to boot. (As Igor himself alluded to right here on R-I ;)

The change took place Monday at midnight, right after the "End" flashback weekend. I tuned in by pure chance then, but I'm glad I did.

There seems to be a serious fundamental shift with the music playlist, what with the incorporation of more 90's alt rock into the mix. Ideally, you could also take some 80's standards in as well, but it's a very good start.

I like the move. WXTM seems to have finally found their footing. If anything, this helps to quell any rumors that there will be a format flip. (Unless if Infinity may be prepping for the format to move to 98.5, that is. But it's conjecture on my point.)

Note that their website still promotes the station with the old logo and "Xtreme" label. As to why, I really don't know.

I'm with you on this one. This repostitioning has been overdue for about 2 or 3 years now. Also, love how they've put in more 90's stuff. The only thing I don't like about the new positioner is that it's very much like 88.3's (88.3 The Sting, Cleveland's Modern Rock Alternative).

I was a little disappointed with Smell's Like The End Weekend. The playlist seemed smaller than what it was over labor day weekend. They played a lot of the same bands (nirvana, pearl jam, rage against the machine, sublime, etc.). I heard the same primitive radio gods song about five hours apart on saturday. But, still heard some stuff that doesn't get played anymore. Overall grade: B-/C+.<P ID="signature">______________

Cleveland's Rock Alternative?? Yeah, okay

Well its about time 92.3 dropped the Cleveland's Xtreme Radio tag....however I'm not impressed so far. From what I've heard, and seen (yes.net) it doesn't seem like much has changed. It does look like they are doing a flashback lunch of sorts, but other than that, just lots and lots of active rock-like titles being played. I don't see very many 90s rock titles being mixed in at all. Still lots of System of a Down, Disturbed, Staind, and Metallica. So that's an Alternative to what?? Although the new sweeps by Iggy sound really good....as usual.

Buc2 is right, the new moniker is very similar to the one used by The Sting, the one that we have in fact been using for almost two years (it was actually my idea). ;) However I doubt anyone at Xtreme cares, as we are obviously a college radio station with a rimshot signal into Cleveland (hopefully the signal thing will change in the near future). I guess the ironic thing is that I came up with Cleveland's Modern Rock Alternative to distance us from 92.3.....oh well. <P ID="signature">______________

The new name doesn't impress me that much. Maybe i'll get used to it after a while.

I would love it if 92.3 added artist like REM, No Doubt, Better Than Ezra, Depeche Mode, Toad The Wet Sprocket, Counting Crows, Barenaked Ladies and other alternative bands that became popular while The END was around

My thoughts exactly. What are they the alternative to? Much of their playlist still mirrors that of WMMS....only with more commercials. Maybe there is still some tweaking that is being done. Who knows. I just expected a bit more, I dunno....change.<P ID="signature">______________

Have an attorney look at it. Seems too close for comfort, ya know?

Unfortunately, I can't give any more advice under the code of ethics--including what I'd do.

FMQB is reporting Jack to 98.5 Tuesday

As part of the weekly "Howard's Leaving Now" sweepstakes, FMQB is reporting that WNCX is one of a number of Infinity stations that may get "Jacked" when Howard is removed from the air Tuesday.

It's all bullshit, no?

Another move 92.3 needs to make is get rid of Iggy. The guy is horrible. Put Verlane on nights or even Bull.

That's a bad move to flip WNCX. It's ratings are really good 25-54 and it's making money. So why flip? Cleveland already has two HAC's and one SAC, a successful oldies and three rock stations, including a well performing NCX. There's really no hole for a "JACK". <P ID="signature">______________

>as much as we all loved WENZ The End - it was never more than a 3.8 with Phil Manning at the helm - and though Sean "Bull" is a great guy and has an amazing ear - he couldn't program his way out of a paper bag - and obviously with XTM's latest numbers (2.9 flat) - Monroe can't cut it either even with her lame attempts at programming by letting past programming run a couple of weeeknds. With MMS and NCX both doing better than XTM and Rover relocating to Chicago to simulcast to even more stations... it just points to 92.3 flipping in January - unless they can get someone in there who can program music and not just play the songs her label friends want her to add Alternative Modern Rock may have a chance here.
About thier website - it has ALWAYS sucked - which is so sad considering that they could probably be wooing more listeners with a strong online precence. It was just never a priority within the system.
Thanks for listening......

Cleveland Plain Dealer, Nov. 26, 1994:

18-34 demo

1. WMMS
2. WNCX
*
*
*
9. WENZ (it wasn't a 3.8...but it wasn't much better)

WMMS had been in the game for less than 6 months; WENZ, nearly two years. WMMS continued to dominate The End until the disasterous format tweak under Bob Neumann in 1997 knocked The Buzzard off its perch.

I hope so, too. 88.3 is a great station.....my compliments.

I was excited about the transmitter move to that nice high building in North Olmsted by Great Northern Mall....a building, by the way, that I can see on the horizon almost from downtown Cleveland. Imagine my disapointment when it was reported that WBWC had to go DIRECTIONAL AWAY from the east because of some CP in Painsville or something. Somebody said that the Painsville CP expired or that the licensee was bought off by BW or something (I hope!). I have a hard time hearing WBWC in Euclid. Anyway, you guys would have a flamethrower signal toward downtown Cleveland and the east if you could let out that directional cut. I hope you can!

The Sting - Cleveland's Modern Rock Alternative

Thanks for the compliments, much appreciated. The station's lawyers are looking into that construction permit...which was granted way back in 1997 from what I understand....meaning that is has expired. However, as with most legal issues, its taking a long time. New equipment is being shopped to boost the signal quality as well....hopefully within the next year The Sting will sound better than ever....westside, eastside, and downtown!!
